Summary

The perfect gift book, featuring the writing of Meryl Streep, Bill Bailey, Emilia Clarke, Olivia Colman, Caitlin Moran, Richard Ayoade, Emily Watson and others, to coincide with the upcoming movie Last Christmas, starring Emma Thompson, Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding.

When you think back to Christmases past, what (if anything) made it magical? Looking towards the future, what would your perfect Christmas be? What would you change? What should we all change?

This is a beautiful, funny and soulful collection of personal essays about the meaning of Christmas, written by a unique plethora of voices from the boulevards of Hollywood to the soup kitchens of Covent Garden.

Away from the John Lewis advert, the high street decorations and the candied orange in Heston Blumenthal's Christmas pudding, this gem of a book introduced and curated by Emma Thompson and Greg Wise celebrates the importance of kindness and generosity, acceptance and tolerance - and shows us that these values are not just for Christmas.

I actually listened to this after Christmas but it made me truly appreciate how lucky myself and my family are. An exceptionally heart warming set of tales. Thank you.

What does Christmas mean to you?

After watching the movie Last Christmas which I loved (although it made me cry) I was curious about this book tie in. This book is nothing really to do with the film apart from the fact it is compiled by Emma Thompson and Greg Wise and about Christmas. It is however a beautifully written collection of personal stories from people of all walks of life about Christmas and what it means to them. Some stories are happy and some sad but it’s honest and fascinating and ultimately kind of a fitting book to go along with the movie.

Lovely Christmas moments

Some really lovely Christmas stories in this, I particularly enjoyed some of the refugee stories . What let the book down was really that some of the most famous voices didn’t record their pieces which was very jarring. Eg someone other then Stephen Fry read his and as I grew up listening to Harry Potter this was disappointing, a few of the big names did voice their stories but the majority didn’t - I imagine this was due to funding and scheduling , however I would have given it 5* if they’d all been read by their counterparts

Highly disappointed

A really disappointing book, the short stories from various well known People are read by actors which in my opinion completely ruins them and doesn’t have the same effect at all. It feels lazy and hearing a comedians Xmas story delivered by a narrator just isn’t the same. Boring, didn’t finish it
