Per un terribile sortilegio è il dipinto a portare i segni dell'età che avanza e della decadenza umana e morale. Un patto diabolico che fa da cornice ed epilogo ad una vita totalmente votata ad una sorta di religione edonistica che porta Dorian a compiere nequizie d'ogni genere, culminanti nell'omicidio.
