Summary
This is a story from the The Happy Prince and Other Stories collection.
Oscar Wilde's collection of fairy stories are among the greatest and most poignant classics for children and adults alike. Humour, pathos, delightful little characters abound in the stories of The Happy Prince and the Swallow who agrees to keep him company despite approaching winter; The Selfish Giant, who doesn't want children playing in his garden, and The Remarkable Rocket. In addition, there are those who are not so familiar: The Star Child, The Young King, and The Devoted Friend.
Editor reviews
When a water rat speaks about devoted friendship, a linnet interrupts to tell the story of Hans, a poor gardener, and his wealthy friend Hugh. When Hans has to sell his wheelbarrow, Hugh lets him have his, leaving Hans indebted to Hugh's every need. Hugh takes advantage of Hans so readily that it leads to the poor man's downfall. Despite its dark themes and ironic sensibility, Oscar Wilde's short story has the feel of a fairy tale, which Anton Lesser performs with a wonderful theatricality. In particular, his performance of the pompous water rat is a raucous delight.
