Summary

Listening helps us be there for others, to support them in tough times and to strengthen our relationships with partners, family, friends and colleagues.

From opening up a conversation with someone who might be struggling, to how to use gentle encouragement to help others share their stories, How to Listen demonstrates the power of listening without judgement and draws on the extensive experience of Samaritans in offering practical advice to apply to your own life.

Friendly and approachable, with a preface by Michael Palin, it includes helpful tips from trained Samaritans on how to talk about how we are feeling, as well as how to listen to one another in a way that can prevent day-to-day concern or worry from escalating into more complex emotions.

Really enjoyed.

Loved the pace and way it was read. Very enjoyable to listen to and lots of important things to be reminded of (from someone whose job and friendships involve putting this into practice).

amazing and I can relate

this book was wonderful. I feel I am a terrible listener and this can only help me improve, I wi definitely master these tips and methods..

I related to the mother dying suddenly one moment they there, the next they are gone.. and I feel I have just been in Limbo since then... 6 years later I think it's time I practiced active listening and become like my mother... she was an angel to so many.

Practical and to the point

I found this book as I wanted to learn more about listening in general, though this book is specifically about how to help and listen to people you care about who are going through something difficult. It was interesting, practical and helpful. As someone who quickly goes into "solution mode" when I see someone struggle, the chapter on "it's ok not to be ok" helped me to see how that can be unhelpful when a person is in a negative mindset and they just want to be heard, not "fixed".

Some good tips, but too focused on crisis

There are some interesting bits to this, but as someone has said it is more of an advert for the Samaritans than it suggests it will be on the cover. It is also, as a result, very focused on people in crisis, rather than being a general guide that is obviously applicable to everyday (non-crisis) situations and life. That isn’t to say there aren’t good tips within it, but if you aren’t picking it up because you have someone in real trouble and you want to know where to turn or what to do, and you just want to know how to listen better in, say, an everyday work situation, then the Samaritans part may become a little annoying.

Some very practical guidance

I feel we all know the value of good communication and a lot of us want to be able to support our loved ones in the best way for them.

I have a sales business and have a brother who is experiencing some mental health challenges so I found some of the practical questions designed to get the person to feel comfortable to speak invaluable.

I am now going to study the book as I want to retain more of the ideas and test them out.

simple and powerful

A much needed tool on how too learn to listen. Loads of examples and real live experiences. Very well narrated. Just the right book for work and private life, something that will definitely help me navigate those awkward moments where I dont know what to say or how to respond, to become a better listener and be more helpful in my community, family and for myself.
