Summary

He is Dexter Mayhew, tall, dark, and (she can't deny it) handsome. She is Emma Morley, bottled red hair, wilfully badly dressed, all principles and no action. Could this be the dawn of the rest of their lives? Or are Dex and Em living proof that - despite an unlikely beginning - men and women really can be just good friends?

A touching story

I thought this was a very clever idea for a story, and enjoyed both the authors writing style, and the narrators reading style, with appropriate and realistic accents to enhance the overall listening experience.

My review only just falls short of the 5 stars in my opinion, and this is only because I felt that there was a disjointed bit in the middle, which I won't explain further for the risk of giving too much away - but overall a thoroughly enjoyable story!

Great love story

Loved this, very nostalgic for anyone who had a “one who got away” relationship in early adulthood.
So much better than the movie adaption which made the story two dimensional.

Gets tedious

The book is well written and the narration excellent. I abandoned finishing this book as it just got so tedious and although the years were different, the story was pretty much the same. It could be abridged significantly.

Amazing narrator

Entertaining and moving book but it is made exceptional because of the most skilled narration.

A well writen storty with belivable characters

Where does One Day rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is an enjoyable book which I was keen to listen to the end so ranks fairly high on my list of books, as if the story is not gripping enough I wont finish it

Would you be willing to try another book from David Nicholls? Why or why not?

Yes as his characters are well written, but I would look for a happier book next time

Which character – as performed by Anna Bentinck – was your favourite?

I loved both the main characters in this book. Anna did a good job of bringing them to life - especially when at times the story flited between characters

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No

Any additional comments?

The end of the story is fairly sad and this is generally not to my taste, although real and def has a conclusion, this is not generally why I read - I read 'listen' to lighten my mood.

Loved the characterisation and the structure

I chose to download this because I'd heard it had a very strong female lead character and I wasn't disappointed. Emma is a great character, believable, flawed and admirable (and scarily like me in places!). Dex is an arse for most of the book but it doesn't make the story any less good. Great twist towards the end that I didn't see coming.

I also liked the structure of the book that takes on day each year over a span of about 20 years. Partly because the historical detail was amusing and partly because of the way it allowed the story to develop.

Made me laugh, made me cry, made me think, entertained me. Life affirming, hopeful. Recommend

One Day the way it should be enjoyed!

I adore this story. I listened to the audiobook version and found the narrator very easy to listen to, not annoying as I find some recordings (sorry narrators, it’s just my taste!) and also versatile, convincing accents and so on.
If you’re here because you have seen the film, I implore you to read the book or maybe even better listen to it! The personal feel of a novel like this comes across really nicely in an audiobook, perhaps it’s that feeling of having a chat with friends. I listened to this for the first time a few years ago on my commute to work. I found myself not minding getting up at 5.30am, because I had this gem to listen to on the bus ride. I was sad when it was over, not just because the ending is bitter/sweet.. but I missed it, missed Em and even Dex! Later on I watched the film, which I did enjoy, as I knew the characters. They were my pals already. But I knew what was coming for them. I also felt that the film, as usual, being much shorter, compact as a work of art, could only scratch the surface of the story. So in the book the characters are much deeper, more likeable, more real, at least for me.
I have since listened again a couple of times as it is now an old friend. It’s up there as one of my favourites.

A Very Clever Story

This is the second time reading this book. I first read it 15 years ago so thought I'd listen to it this time. What a great story and such a clever concept. I'm a big fan of David Nicholls and this one doesn't disappoint. Would highly recommend.

A great listen

One of my favourite books turned into a favourite listen. Fantastic narration and storytelling. If anything I love it even more now.

I love this book

Could have been written for me or many of my friends this is a brilliant book that I couldn't stop reading. I was less enthusiastic about the narration here, Emma was more annoying and Dexter not as charming as I had imagined him whilst reading. It was an absorbing Audible though and I am sad to have finished.
