Summary

When Detective Inspector Robert Finlay is sent to a military barracks to investigate a connection to weapons discovered in the possession of London gangsters, he is given strict instructions not to get involved in a suicide enquiry into the recent death of a young, recruit soldier.

The army partners Finlay with Floria McLaren, an ambitious military policewoman who doesn't believe the death was a suicide. Ellie Rodgers is a traumatised army officer who discovers the existence of a cabal of soldiers who exploit young recruits for sexual and criminal purposes. Jodie Baker is the plaything of a devious and narcissistic training sergeant. Wendy Russell is a senior police officer with an undercover agent gone missing. All are in danger. Separately, or together, they must fight for justice.

What appears to be a routine investigation soon takes on a life of its own as Finlay finds himself in a struggle with powerful forces–both criminal and from the military establishment–who know that, inside the wire, they make the rules.

Gripping and Powerful

Having listened to the previous three, thrilling, books by Matt Johnson, featuring Robert Finlay, ex SAS officer now a detective for the Metropolitan Police, I approached this story expecting the same strong characters and well crafted, authentic, storytelling I've come to associate with Johnson's novels and was not disappointed with 'Crow 27' and the welcome return of Finlay, The previous books have covered senstive issues with sensitivity but without skirting the crux of the topic and once again this is the case with 'Crow 27'. Although set in a fictional army base in South Wales, where Finlay is sent to investigate how firearms from that base turned up in a raid in London, it seems to have its feet firmly in the murky clay of real-life events. Finaly soon becomes involved in uncovering the truth of the ongoing, disturbing, culture of bullying, harrassment and sexual assaults...as well as a suspicoius suicide of a young female recruit . When I had finished listening to this moving novel, so brilliantly read, once again, by Leighton Pugh, I felt compelled to go for a long walk, where I stood, for sometime, staring at the scenery.

Excellent

I was gripped by this book from beginning to end. It is very well written giving enough detail while letting a fast moving investigation into deaths of young army recruits at a fictional army training base unfold. The narrator brought the cast of well drawn characters to life with a wide range of accurate regional accents. If you want a police procedural novel that goes beyond the civilian norms then I recommend this book. I hope that the author writes more soon.

Stark, Brutal, Gripping

A stark, brutal story of the treatment of young recruits. Well narrated and fantastically written.
