Summary

Behind one of the greatest tragedies in UK policing history lies an incredible political scandal.

On 17 April 1984, as demonstrators gathered outside the Libyan embassy in London, two gunmen lay in wait inside. At 10.18 a.m. automatic gunfire rained down on the protestors and WPC Yvonne Fletcher fell, mortally wounded.

As his friend lay dying, PC John Murray made her a promise that he would not rest until those responsible had been brought to justice. Thirty-seven years would pass before he was able to fulfil that undertaking.

While researching this moving account of one man’s dogged pursuit of justice for a murdered colleague, Matt Johnson uncovered secret-service deals and government duplicity, all part of a plan to force an end to the National Union of Mineworkers’ strike. He discovered the real reason Yvonne’s killers were allowed to go free and how events that day led to thirty years of growing political control of policing, resulting in the disarray increasingly evident today.

This compelling account pulls seemingly unconnected threads into a coherent – and shocking – whole. It provides startling insights into how decisions taken by our politicians and the actions of our intelligence agencies, supposedly in our best interests, may be anything but.

Wow! What a moving account

I knew a bit about the killing of Wpc Fletcher, or so I thought!
A story that brought tears to my eyes on more than one occasion. I never knew so much was linked to this incident. The determination of John Murray to seek justice for Wpc Fletcher is admirable in the face of a government who would rather it just disappeared. In conclusion a fantastic account of the ongoing ascertainment by one man to fulfill his promise to a dying colleague and friend

Outstanding commitment to justice & loyalty to colleague

This was an amazing account of the fall of a serving police officer in the line of her duty, the incredible loyalty by her colleague John Murry to honour his promise to Yvonne, and fight for British Justice against all the political obstacles. At times in brought me to tears, it is well written with amazing attention to detail that police investigators experience. It is a true testament to the dedication to duty of good police officers, and the amazing loyalty to fight adversity in its many forms at the expense of health and family costs, in the fight for justice.

indepth and intriguing real life story

I knew about Yvonne Fletcher and have followed John's story for a few years. Such a well researched book with the tragic death of Yvonne at the hands of foreign extremists and a 40 year battle for justice weaving through political misdoings and interference. Better than any political thriller and very emotional in places with stories of heroic and epic proportions.

Hard going but brilliant

What a great book. Hard going at times but a story that must be told. Well done to all involved. A criminal trial should go ahead.

Can't recommend more

I had heard about Yvonne of course but hearing this story in detail was shocking. John Murray is a friend anyone would want in their life and Yvonne would be so proud of him. The details of the story and the narration was well done and laid out. Jaw dropping moments at every turn. I would highly recommend this to anyone who like to listen to a fight for justice. Inspirational.

The thread that leads to so many revelations

What I expected to be a story of justice for a fallen comrade becomes and breathtaking history lesson of the past forty years. Nothing is spared in this investigation. The writing puts you very much in the moment. I'm tempted to suggest it should be a film so more people learn what happened, but a film could never be as engaging and may skip over some of the small but essential details.

Even if you think you know the story, be prepared to learn some chilling facts and hidden connections.

Compelling

A very impressive book, detailed but personal, telling one mans crusade for justice for his friend and colleague. Although I have known of his fight from the beginning, the book gave me, and I hope many, an insight into John Murray’s unbreakable determination to find out the truth and bring those responsible to justice.
