Whispers Under Ground, book 3 in the best-selling PC Peter Grant series by Ben Aaronovitch and narrated by English actor Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, is a laugh-out-loud modern mystery crime detective audiobook, complete and unabridged. London is not as it seems - with evil gods and goddesses of the Thames, dark magic lurking in the tube system and monsters hiding in the shadows, it is up to wizard and PC Peter Grant to maintain order. PC Grant must use his cunning detective skills to track down a killer in Soho. But it’s a dangerous task when there’s no one to call for backup. Available now from Audible.

Summary

Doctor Who Screenwriter Ben Aaronovitch's superbly entertaining supernatural crime series has, with its witty one-liners and wonderfully erudite take on London, won a legion of fans in double quick time.

Peter Grant is learning magic fast. And it's just as well - he's already had run-ins with the deadly supernatural children of the Thames and a terrifying killer in Soho. Progression in the Police Force is less easy. Especially when you work in a department of two. A department that doesn't even officially exist. A department that if you did describe it to most people would get you laughed at. And then there's his love life. The last person he fell for ended up seriously dead. It wasn't his fault, but still.

Now something horrible is happening in the labyrinth of tunnels that make up the tube system that honeycombs the ancient foundations of London. And delays on the Northern line is the very least of it. Time to call in the Met's Economic and Specialist Crime Unit 9, aka 'The Folly'. Time to call in PC Peter Grant, Britain's Last Wizard.

Read by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith.

This series gets better with every book

What made the experience of listening to Whispers Under Ground the most enjoyable?

Kobna Holdbrook-Smith's performance. Impeccable. The man is a genius.

What other book might you compare Whispers Under Ground to, and why?

It's nothing like it, I know, but Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. I know they are not at all similar really, but for some reason when reading this question I think of that book.

Which character – as performed by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith – was your favourite?

How to choose? The guy is a genius. I can't mention just one. Besides Peter, I love Nightingale, Chelsea and Olympia and Lesley, of course.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Mmmh... can't say without including spoilers

Any additional comments?

I usually listen to audiobooks as companions of the books I'm reading. I love reading as an activity, but I walk for about one hour every day and do housework so that's when I listen to my audiobooks, which helps me manage my anxiety and impatience to go back to my book (before I would neglect things I had to do and took the tube instead of walking just to carry on reading). In this case, the performance is so good that I find myself listening at times when I would usually be reading which is very unusual.

Fantastic series of books, skillfully narrated by Kobna Holdrook-Smith.

Certainly the best series of book I've heard in a very long time. Well researched and fun to listen too. I would urge you to listen to the series in order

London, Magic and Cops: Series continues to please

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, though I would recommend the PC Grant series to be read in order. The series is quite tightly connected and one would lose out a bit in reading books out of order.

Have you listened to any of Kobna Holdbrook-Smith’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I have listened to Holdbrook-Smith only in the other PC Grant books and he has been consistently wonderful.

Any additional comments?

I am eager to read the next book in the series. Aaronovitch leaves events and characters 'in progress' and I want to see how they develop. Also, the books are enhancing my knowledge and appreciation of London.

Good pairing

I have enjoyed the third book as much as the others. It is difficult to decide whether the writer or the narrator is the main star. The book is brought to life very successfully by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith and works as a stand alone novel but is improved by knowledge from the first two. Highly recommended series and narrator.

Another brilliant Peter Grant story

If you haven't listened to any of the Peter Grant stories, there are 5 so far and this is the third, why??

The narration is some of the best I have heard, the story is fast paced and dynamic.

Start with the Rivers of London and go from there, you won't be sorry
