Editor reviews

Humour and mystery are an unlikely coupling, but in Moon over Soho, book 2 of the Sunday Times best-selling PC Peter Grant series, written by talented author Ben Aaronovitch, fans are brought to tears with the hilarious endeavors of PC Peter Grant - Police Constable and wizard apprentice. This is a modern detective audiobook unlike any other and brilliantly narrated by English actor Kobna Holdbrook-Smith. PC Grant has embarked on a thrilling battle against the monsters and supernatural dangers that lurk in the shadows around London. Available now from Audible.

Summary

I was my dad's vinyl-wallah: I changed his records while he lounged around drinking tea, and that's how I know my Argo from my Tempo. And it's why, when Dr Walid called me to the morgue to listen to a corpse, I recognised the tune it was playing. Something violently supernatural had happened to the victim, strong enough to leave its imprint like a wax cylinder recording. Cyrus Wilkinson, part-time jazz saxophonist and full-time accountant, had apparently dropped dead of a heart attack just after finishing a gig in a Soho jazz club. He wasn't the first.

No one was going to let me exhume corpses to see if they were playing my tune, so it was back to old-fashioned legwork, starting in Soho, the heart of the scene. I didn't trust the lovely Simone, Cyrus' ex-lover, professional jazz kitten and as inviting as a Rubens portrait, but I needed her help: there were monsters stalking Soho, creatures feeding off that special gift that separates the great musician from someone who can raise a decent tune. What they take is beauty. What they leave behind is sickness, failure and broken lives.

And as I hunted them, my investigation got tangled up in another story: a brilliant trumpet player, Richard 'Lord' Grant - my father - who managed to destroy his own career, twice. That's the thing about policing: most of the time you're doing it to maintain public order. Occasionally you're doing it for justice. And maybe once in a career, you're doing it for revenge.

Read by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith.

Fantastic Narrator

Just wanted to say this is a cracking story read phenomenally well by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith. Really enjoying the series!

Even better than the first- the series matures excellently

I’m so sad I came late to reading/listening to this. I feel I have missed out and yet have a wealth of catch up awaiting me. Moon over Soho was a fantastic listen- the narration first class, the characterisation immaculate and the enjoyment paramount.

Following on nearly from book one- an almost seamless transition, we are immersed once again into the world of Peter Blake, Nightingale and their companions in the supernatural crimes of London.

Funnier than the first, I chuckled out loud at parts, I cannot find fault.

If you haven’t read the first I do recommend doing these in order- it does help as it’s like a never ending story so far.

good but not as good as Rivers of London.

Very nice story that continues from right where rivers of London finished. Although it is a bit more predictable I was intrigued by one of the mysterys right up until it unexpectedly ends with no resolution. It was certainly setting up the next book in the series and i hope to find the resolution there but it creates a disappointing end to this book.

Loved it

I really enjoyed this second book. Kobna Holdbrook-Smith is perfect as PC Peter Grant as well as all the other characters.
The only down side I have with this story is that it's not as amazing as the 1st book. Not sure why just didn't enjoy it quite as much.
And it's not fair to leave a listener with such a tantalising (but obvious on reflection) cliff hanger at the end of the book :-)

Good follow up

PC Grant returns in a grittier, steamier and definitely more sweary adventure (beware if listening with children around). Enjoyed the mix of characters, ongoing and new storylines and surprise ending - looking forward to the next episode!

Truly gripping, unputdownable stuff!

If you could sum up Moon Over Soho in three words, what would they be?

Gripping. Absorbing. Tense.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Moon Over Soho?

Finding an old gangsters' head in a coin operated clown machine.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

PC Grant walking into the trap at the end.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Laugh. No crying. Just tense gripping stuff.

Just keeps getting better

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Sometimes a sequel can feel a let down - this however is a great next step in the story of our by now favourite Metropolitan Police Constable. Picks up where it left off and moves apace through a new series of events that keep you entertained until the very end. Another fantastic spoken word performance does the author proud.

What does Kobna Holdbrook-Smith bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

A truly talented performance adds sublety and nuance to each character aiding your visualisation as the story unwinds in your imagination

Any additional comments?

Totally good fun - when will Book 3 arrive!!!!!

Fantastical Supernatural Crime fiction

Have to say I'm really enjoying this series on several account. The great mix of detail, humour and sense of place All comes together with a fitting performance. Although not a complete story as there is only a part resolution, this book takes you further into the world of PC Grant and DC Nightingale.
