Summary

What if you could go back in time and change the course of history? What if the watershed moment you could change was the JFK assassination? 11.22.63, the date that Kennedy was shot - unless....

King takes his protagonist Jake Epping, a high school English teacher from Lisbon Falls, Maine, 2011, on a fascinating journey back to 1958 - from a world of mobile phones and iPods to a new world of Elvis and JFK, of Plymouth Fury cars and Lindy Hopping, of a troubled loner named Lee Harvey Oswald and a beautiful high school librarian named Sadie Dunhill, who becomes the love of Jake's life - a life that transgresses all the normal rules of time.

With extraordinary imaginative power, King weaves the social, political and popular culture of his baby-boom American generation into a devastating exercise in escalating suspense.

Critic reviews

“This new epic from Stephen King rates among the best he’s written – no small praise for the man who wrote Carrie, It, The Stand and Under the Dome.” ( Trucking News)

Entertaining

Enjoyable read.

Did not entirely agree with the ending because I believe there was a conspiracy involving the mafia and possibly the CIA. Also that the outcome for the future would have been brighter but S.K writes horror stories and in this genre stories don't always have happy endings. It worked well for the story arc too.

Always enjoy King's books.

A long brilliant listen

This book really does have it all. It's thrilling, funny and - unlike the protagonist - it had me in tears.

Gripping read

a bit slow moving in places, mainly early on in the book. but you'll soon get into it. overall a fantastic story and increasingly addictive and unputdownable as the story progressed!

energizing.

The first 10 minutes made me think that I made a mistake. Boring and confusing. But labouring on really paid off, because the setting makes you think. Think hard on what I would do when I was able to traveling back in time and what the physical implications are if you do. So, the book does not stop to bewilder when you turn of the switch. One drawback: the personal stories are somewhat too long spun out.

My thoughts

I am not one for historical books really, but found this FASCINATING! The time travel element was intriguing and the fall out even more so.
Glad of the choice!
