It's OK but could have been rather better
I've reached around Dialogue 30 now so feel qualified enough to comment on this title. It's becoming more challenging to understand everything now. This title will certainly have its uses, just don't expect too much from it.
Why? This title does not dramatise a trip to or stay in the Netherlands or Belgium, but instead portrays numerous very short dialogues between *Americans* living in *America*. You're even told this in the introduction to the printed version. Basically what they did was create lots of dialogues between various fictional Americans and then translate them (idiomatically they claim) into Dutch, having a Dutch couple act them out. For me, this feels like a rather lazy approach and a great opportunity is missed for the listener to learn more about the Netherlands or Belgium. Instead, you listen to a couple of Dutch voice actors talk about things happening in New York or Portland, etc. It just sounds weird.
The acting, especially by the American couple (the same 4 voice actors do all the dialogues, another opportunity missed), sounds pretty wooden (especially the man, who has the classic old-fashioned deep American voice, of course, responds too quickly and lacks a range of emotions). A range of actors and more natural-sounding responses would have improved the listener's experience and learning.
Some creativity has gone into making the actual dialogues, but the fact they play out where they do and use the same actors every time makes the whole thing feel a bit lazy (and probably done on the cheap).
Certainly it will be useful for improving your Dutch listening skills, and I'd probably give it 3.5 stars overall, just know what you're getting and don't expect too much. Certainly it's not the only Dutch conversation guide you'll ever need, as the publishers claim.
