International best-selling novelist Dan Brown delivers the exhilarating third audiobook in his Robert Langdon series, The Lost Symbol, narrated by American actor Paul Michael. This phenomenal series has taken the world by storm. Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon hunts through hidden chambers and secret tunnels under Washington D.C to save his kidnapped mentor. He must use all his knowledge and skill to break through the codes but the task ahead seems impossible and the clock is ticking ever-closer towards danger. What Langdon never suspects is the shocking twist of truth that will change everything. Available now from Audible.

Summary

The Lost Symbol, the stunning follow-up to The Da Vinci Code, is a masterstroke of storytelling - a deadly race through a real-world labyrinth of codes and unseen truths...all under the watchful eye of a terrifying villain. Set within the unseen tunnels and temples of Washington, D.C., The Lost Symbol accelerates through a startling landscape toward an unthinkable finale.

Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is summoned to deliver an evening lecture in the U.S. Capitol. Within minutes of his arrival, the night takes a bizarre turn. A disturbing object - artfully encoded with five ancient symbols - is discovered in the Capitol Building. The object is an ancient invitation, meant to usher its recipient into a long-lost world of hidden esoteric wisdom. And when Langdon's mentor Peter Solomon - prominent Mason and philanthropist - is kidnapped, Langdon's only hope of saving Peter is to accept this invitation and follow wherever it leads him. Langdon finds himself plunged into a clandestine world of Masonic secrets, hidden history, and never-before-seen locations...all of which seem to be dragging him toward a single, inconceivable truth.

The Lost Symbol is exactly what Dan Brown's fans have been waiting for...his most thrilling novel yet.

Critic reviews

"Impossible to put down....Mr. Brown was writing sensational visual scenarios long before his books became movie material. This time he again enlivens his story with amazing imagery....Thanks to him, picture postcards of the capital's most famous monuments will never be the same....In the end it is Mr. Brown's sweet optimism, even more than Langdon's sleuthing and explicating, that may amaze his readers most." ( The New York Times)
"Thrilling, entertaining....Robert Langdon goes for another roller-coaster ride - this time in a hunt for a Masonic treasure in Washington, D.C." ( Los Angeles Times)

Gripping

narrator was very good, very gripping. Story had some great twists, and the historic/scientific info within the book was gold.

A continuing story following Robert Langford

Would you try another book written by Dan Brown or narrated by Paul Michael?

Having already read the Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons, it was a forgone conclusion for me to finish the "series" follow the escapades of this interesting and fascinating symbolist. This centres around codes and symbols from the secretive side of freemasonry but with some compelling action. Not quite as gripping as the previous 2 but worth a read if you like the character of Robert Langdon, as I do.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Robert Langdon is my favourite character and the sole reason for continuing the series of stories with him as the main protagonist, I love codes and cyphers and symbols and he really makes me want to find out more of the subjects explored.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Im not sure the narrator could do much better but some of the different characters "voices" become similar as it progresses and can make things a little tricky to follow who's talking at times, but on the whole not bad at all.

Could you see The Lost Symbol being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?

I would love to see this made into a movie and would sincerely hope that Tom Hanks would reprise his role as langdon, I saw the movie adaptation of Da Vinci Code which I really enjoyed although, as always you get much more from the book as far as detail and suspense goes.

Any additional comments?

A great addition to the series and although many seem to downplay Dan Browns writing ability, although its true at times things seem a bit "samey" or rehashed older ideas, the stories are compelling and I don't think the style of writing is too bad, its certainly not worth missing out on the story content because of a dislike to the authors writing style.

If you liked Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons, then id certainly recommend this to continue the robert langdon series.

If you are one of these that dislike Dan Brown for any reason, this won't change your mind, but I did enjoy this story and any langdon fan would be a fool to miss out.

As Expected from Dan Brown

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, if the friend was a fan of suspense books and/or Dan Brown

Any additional comments?

Pretty standard Dan Brown. The book is as good as any other in the series, for better and for worse. The plotline is intriguing and suspenseful, but if you're familiar with Dan Brown's work, you can see the plot twists coming from a mile away. Don't buy this book and expect something groundbreaking from the author. If you just want to read another Brown book, you're in for a treat.

Typical Dan Brown, well narrated.

I tend only to listen to books I have already read otherwise I miss three-quarters of the story. Having read this book I obviously knew the gist of the story. It is typical Dan Brown conspiracy theory style, the twist at the end is pretty obvious and I don't personally buy in to the far fetched plot. However I don't believe in Hobbits but Lord of the Rings is fantastic, my point being if you suspend reality and allow yourself to be taken along on the story/plot Dan Brown is creating it is a very enjoyable read, even if you don't believe in it yourself. The Priory of Sion in the Da Vinci code has been proven to be a load of rubbish, but that doesn't mean it's not a good story, what is presented in the Robert Langdon stories are just that, stories.

Let yourself get carried along for the ride and you'll enjoy it, if you're after facts and historical accuracy buy an encyclopaedia.

The narration is very good evenly paced, clear and articulate, with decent accents and representation of the characters.

Expected too much

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Not really, the style of writing seemed to be different to other Dan Brown books I have read.

If you’ve listened to books by Dan Brown before, how does this one compare?

I've read the first two in the series, and this was a long way behind them, although great respect to the author for the details that it goes into. Either he has great knowledge, or I am very gullible. Maybe both!

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

Narration was fine, although the accent a little irritating.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No

The Da Vinci Code Again

Enjoyable romp through Washington, but felt to me very much like the Da Vinci Code all over again, except in DC.

Fantastic

Whether what Dan Brown writes includes truth or untruth, it is utterly believeable and plausable, this book was fantastic. I couldn't put it down and feel lost now I've finished it. The twist at the end was completely unexpected. Just as good as The Davinci Code and Angels and Demons, if not better. Well worth the purchase.

Great story!

What does Paul Michael bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

It was a good performance overall I thought which was just spoiled a bit for me by one character's voice that grated on me every time "they" spoke (the FBI woman, Sato). I was like, pleeeease stop with the silly voice.

Any additional comments?

My main problem with any kind of treasure hunt type story - looking for a lost item of tremendous significance to all of mankind and beyond and all that - is that the chase is nearly always more exciting than the final reveal. I was a bit disappointed by the ending, and I'd worked out a major character reveal long before it happened which I'm sure would have helped had I been in the dark about it.....and I got a bit bored of Mal'akh constantly admiring his own rippling tattooed body and how glorious it all was - get over yourself, chap,

Its a pretty good story other than that and a decent performance - worth a listen.
