Lori Rader-Day’s first attempt at writing was Beverly Cleary fan-fiction. Fan-fiction is what they call that sort of thing now. Then, they would have called it theft. She was 7. Her life of crime began. Lori’s earliest favorite reads also included Encyclopedia Brown, Harriet the Spy, The Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, and Lois Duncan books. When she graduated to the adult section of her public library, she discovered Agatha Christie and Mary Higgins Clark. She was 11 years old and far, far too young for Mary Higgins Clark. She persisted. Lori wrote stories all through her childhood and into her young adulthood through two college degrees in journalism from Ball State University, but fell away from writing accidentally after changing jobs, cities, and marital status in one move. She finally decided to take writing seriously, and studied creative writing for a master of fine arts degree at Roosevelt University in Chicago. She graduated in 2009 with the degree, thirteen published short stories (including a prize winner published for the 26 million readers of Good Housekeeping), and encouragement from both Jodi Picoult and Donald Ray Pollack. As close as those two novelists might be on the bookshelf, they should never be in a sentence together, and yet here we are. Today Lori Rader-Day is the author of The Death of Us, Death at Greenway, The Lucky One, Under a Dark Sky, The Day I Died, Little Pretty Things, and The Black Hour. She has been nominated for the Edgar ® Award and is the recipient of the 2021 Agatha Award, the 2019 and 2018 Anthony Awards for Best Paperback Original, the 2016 Simon and Schuster Mary Higgins Clark Award, and the 2015 Anthony Award for Best First Novel. Lori lives in Chicago, where she is the co-chair of the mystery readers' event Midwest Mystery Conference and a past national president of Sisters in Crime, a 4500+-member crime writers organization started by Sara Paretsky more than 30 years ago.
