Dexter Trumpet (who’s actually not very good at the trumpet) lives in a castle made of trumpets. To deter anyone from disturbing him while he’s writing, the castle is surrounded by a moat of maple syrup and stern-looking guards. Anyone who manages to trudge through the moat gets a big ball of gloopy lemon curd thrown at them. The only person allowed in the castle while Dexter is writing is Bobby, who isn’t actually a person. He’s a spider. But he’s no ordinary spider. Dexter reads him chapters of his work and Bobby lets him know how good it is. If it’s rubbish, he might suggest Dexter should become something else, like a shoelace maker (he’s a very honest insect). Bobby can even make cups of hot chocolate. Well, he can press the button that starts up the machine, which is still pretty good for a little spider. When he’s not writing, Dexter enjoys juggling nectarines, hanging out with his friends, impersonating dogs and eating pancakes. He also reads lots and lots of books. The castle is full of books of all shapes and sizes – because books are the only place you can truly let your imagination run wild.
