Bill Steigerwald is a veteran libertarian newspaper and magazine journalist from Pittsburgh whose work for the LA Times, two Pittsburgh dailies and magazines like Reason can be found at https://clips.substack.com/ In 2022 he published "Grandpa Bear Goes to Washington," which is a satire disguised as a children's book that stars a talking libertarian polar bear who goes to Washington to tell politicians that polar bears are not an endangered species, don't need help from humans and want to be left alone. His 2017 nonfiction book "30 Days a Black Man" tells the amazing but forgotten story about an undercover mission by a Pittsburgh newspaperman into the Jim Crow South in 1948 that shook up the whole country. In 2010 Steigerwald retraced John Steinbeck's "Travels With Charley" road trip of 1960 and wrote "Dogging Steinbeck." A travel book that explored Flyover Country and its people, "DS" exposed the many fictions and fibs Steinbeck put into "Charley" and forced its publisher to admit after fifty years that it was a work of fiction, not nonfiction. He retired from the newspaper business in March 2009. He and his wife Trudi lived south of Pittsburgh in the woods until May of 2022, when they moved to nearby Bethany, WV.
