Summary

Civil war looms in the Bobiverse in this brand-new, epic-length adventure by Audible number one best seller Dennis E. Taylor.

More than a hundred years ago, Bender set out for the stars and was never heard from again. There has been no trace of him despite numerous searches by his clone-mates. Now Bob is determined to organize an expedition to learn Bender’s fate - whatever the cost.

But nothing is ever simple in the Bobiverse. Bob’s descendants are out to the 24th generation now, and replicative drift has produced individuals who can barely be considered Bobs anymore. Some of them oppose Bob’s plan; others have plans of their own. The out-of-control moots are the least of the Bobiverse’s problems.

Undaunted, Bob and his allies follow Bender’s trail. But what they discover out in deep space is so unexpected and so complex that it could either save the universe - or pose an existential threat the likes of which the Bobiverse has ever faced.

Heaven’s River is the fourth installment in the blockbuster Audible Original Bobiverse series - which has sold more than one million copies.

Enthralling

Well my first thought was that the writer was a great fan of Arthur C Clarke but he takes it far beyond Rama creating many worlds in the Bobiverse. Each world was painted so vividly you could see it clearly in your minds eye, and the characters within it. Some of them I would love to visit. Or perhaps join Bob in vert for a chat! The narration as in all the books is excellent with perfect inflection and tone for all the voices.

A Unique Series Continues

As a fan of the series I was delighted when a 4th book was annouced. It continues the series brilliantly with an inevitable study of how time changes everything and its delivered in the usual style. Well performed too, recommended to anyone who enjoyed the others. If you haven't tried the series, I urge you to go back to the first book and try that. Brilliant series.

Easy to digest, Sadly predictable

In short, this book is as well written as the previous trilogy, but suffers from characters that are far from as intelligent as they're stated to be; while the plot is almost disturbingly predictable.
This book, like the others, has a few threads running in parallel - the keys ones being a rebellion within the Bobiverse, and a Quest through an alien world to rescue a captured shipmate.
Both become Whodunnits, but this is spoiled part way through as one is resolved very quickly in (though the story attempts to McGuffin its' way to pretending it isn't), while the second is truly unsubtle with clues dropped like anvils which left me thinking "this cannot possibly be going where it looks like it's going". But no, it does.
As with the other books, there is artificial peril inserted (e.g. they can remote control space ships anywhere in the universe, so why are they so keen to be on board?) but at least it is acknowledged this time round!
And at the climax of the book, the story is resolved with a deus ex machina.

Despite all this, the book expands nicely on the universe building, with interesting relationships between factions and characters, and some nice explorations of philosophy woven in there.
So even if you ignore the story, it still stands up as an enjoyable read that I ploughed through in a weekend.

The reading is as varied and interesting as before (though some characters have changed voices between books!). One of the difficulties in the previous books has been that almost every character is Bob, and almost all the interactions are Bob talking to a copy of Bob. This book does not suffer so much, as the story splits up the Bobs and gives more non-Bobs time in the spotlight, making this naration easier.

Entertaining

Yet another great book, well thought out and very entertaining, with good vocal delivery. A good edition to the Bobiverse collection

definitely not as good as the first book. I stopped 3/4 through and couldn't listen anymore. such a shame as the first book was so so good.

A bit slow

I was mostly disappointed with errors in the audio. Glitches, repetitions and holes of silence that made me check my device if it still works. Story while definitively slower and somewhat internally repetitive, in comparison to previous books, in the end was surprising and I like the result. Worth buying.

Great sequel and start of something more

I'm glad I ignored the criticisms and bought this.

There's a civil war, potential fracturing of the Bobiverse, moral dilemmas, and half the book is sneaky infiltration into a virgin culture.

The book doesn't tie up a lot of loose ends but damn me if the journey wasn't cute or funny.

Half the book is Bob 1 doing what Bob 1 is expected to do.

I love the Bobiverse.

The combination of fantastic writing, humour & incredible attention to scientific detail, along with the truly wonderful narration, make Dennis E. Taylor & Ray Porter, a brilliant pair. The Bobiverse keeps getting better & better, with every novel & as the writer/narrator cooperation evolves.
Listen to these audiobooks. If you like sci-fi, humour & thought provoking material, you won’t be disappointed
