In February, 1806, the frigate carrying Vice-Admiral Sir Richard Bolitho drops anchor off the shores of southern Africa. Bolitho's instructions are to assist in hastening the campaign in Africa where an expeditionary force is attempting to recapture Cape Town from the Dutch. Bolitho is still brooding over the loss of his flagship, and hi socntinuing personal troubles are only brightened by his love for Catherine, Lady Somervell. Even after his return from Cape Town there is little peace, and the men who follow Bolitho's flag into battle are to discover, not for the first time, that death is the only victor.©2000 Alexander Kent (P)2014 Audible, Inc Action & Adventure Espionage Genre Fiction Historical Fiction Kurgu Sea Adventures Spies & Politics Thriller & Suspense War & Military Afrika Macera Askeri

The bits about the main character and his naval adventures is great, but the bits about his wife and girlfriend are very long and tedious 🥹

Hard work for long periods I'm afraid

My first A Kent book, I found it hard to follow but nonetheless an entertaining read

Good yarn but very complicated

Hero worship at sea, romance on shore. The melodrama continues the usual themes with obvious bad officers and good officers (i.e. those who are like Bolitho) who get their dues but only after a meeting intro covering the usual resentments like landsmen that don't worship naval heroes. Bolitho cannot be healed by medics but he can be healed by intimacy with women especially other men's women. The story is the same as the other books with minor changes. This time the woman whose life revolves around Bolitho is called Kate. I cannot remember which is which anymore as they all live hollow existences.

Mills and Boom!
