2024 Audie Award Winner for Literary Fiction & Classics

When Emily Wilson’s translation of The Odyssey appeared in 2017―rendering the ancient poem in contemporary language that was “fresh, unpretentious and lean” (Madeline Miller, Washington Post)―critics lauded it as “a revelation” (Susan Chira, New York Times) and “a cultural landmark” (Charlotte Higgins, Guardian) that would forever change how Homer is read in English. Now Wilson has returned with an equally revelatory translation of Homer’s other great epic―the most revered war poem of all time.

Brought to life in vivid audio form, this crisp verse translation of The Iliad roars with the clamor of arms, the bellowing boasts of victors, the fury and grief of loss, and the anguished cries of dying men. It sings, too, of the sublime magnitude of the world―the fierce beauty of nature and deities’ grand schemes beyond the ken of mortals.

Wilson’s musical iambic pentameter verse is brought to life in the evocative voice of narrator and Broadway legend Audra McDonald. In her thrilling reading, this magical and often horrifying tale gallops at a pace befitting its legendary battle scenes. The culmination of a decade of intense engagement with antiquity’s most surpassingly beautiful and emotionally complex poetry, Wilson’s Iliad now gives us a complete Homer for our generation.

Emily Wilson’s translation of both The Iliad and The Odyssey is visceral and fresh. She makes the highly complex and over 2,700 years old poems readable and relatable, shining especially in The Iliad, where Homer took a “slice-of-life” approach to depicting war. And depict war The Iliad does, down to the gory details of spears penetrating bladders, bronze swords cutting tongues and teeth, hurled rocks crushing thigh bones. Quentin Tarantino, move aside.

Wilson's simplicity, however, is somewhat lost in Audra McDonald's performance, who narrates The Iliad with highly dramatic, theatrical flare, and often launches into an almost unbearably high pitch, especially in the first few chapters (her performance improves towards the middle of the book). It is the delivery better suited for stage than for Audible, and really requires pitch equalisation.

I came to The Iliad after listening to Claire Danes’ intimate yet powerful narration of The Odyssey translated by Wilson.

What a difference Danes made and how I wish Audible would commission her to also narrate Wilson's translation of The Iliad.

What a joy to listen to, as was originally intended, and to read along to this translation. Old age had almost devoured me before I came to these texts, The Odyssey and The Iliad. I cannot thank Emily Wilson enough for bringing them to life so vividly.

The bright eyed goddess of translation does it again.

I’ve always been a bit afraid of the Iliad and Odyssey, but I found myself being pulled into this! Audra M’s reading was absolutely engaging, she really made the story come alive.

Excellent translation, amazing reading.

This was a very approachable translation of the Iliad with a superb introduction too. You can tell Emily really cares about this topic.

Narrator did a great job too

Great translation and performance

Emily Wilson's new modern translation of the Illiad is a counterpart to her earlier new Odyssey. Claire Danes did that performance and it was excellent. Alas, Audra McDonald is less good. The narration segments are fine but the voices of the characters have little nuance or distinction between them and she get very shouty too often. It's a very hard gig to play all the characters and it got more and more irritating and distracting from the Wilson version of the story as it went on.

Great translation, disappointing performance
