Perfect period detail and rapturously romantic from one of the best-known and beloved romantic novelists.

Even as a 14-year-old orphan, Simon Beauvallet knows his own mind. Later, friend and foe alike will know better than to cross the flaxen-haired mountain of a man whose exploits in battle have earned him knighthood, lands and gilded armour.

After Agincourt, he has no equal save the king himself in generalship - until his legendary prowess is baulked by a woman. In Normandy, the icy rage of Simon the Coldheart must melt - or quench Lady Margaret, spitfire of Belremy.

I have been a Georgette Heyer fan for more than 60 years, Her books are well written, well researched and most important a really good read. I hadn't tried this one, mainly because it is historical and her regency books are more to my taste. I read Beauvallet again recently, I love this book, and Nicholas Beauvallet is a descendant of Simon. I did enjoy Simon very much but just not quite as much as her others, the narration was very good too. The descriptions of the clothes, the various foods and the different locations were missing for me, I understand that these were not relevant at this time. Still a good read though, my comments are purely my taste. Read and enjoy.

Simon the Coldheart was apparently not Georgette Heyer's favourite work. But I think her famous good judgement failed her here.
Just as with her books set in the 18th century, her meticulous research creates an authentic atmosphere of the period. There is exactly the right amount of Medieval jargon to give colour without becoming tedious. It is a rich and smooth read.
And I loved the characters. Lord Fulk is a blustering lovable bear of a man, his son Alan is a courtly romantic knight while still wielding a mean sword....
And the hero and heroine, all-conquering Lord Simon of Beauvallet and the Amazon Countess Margaret of Belremy, are fascinating and appealing. I loved it that lowly-born Simon won his way to the top on his own merit. I loved Lady Margaret's feisty character, won over by Simon despite being at daggers drawn - literally- a lot of the time.
S the C is a great comfort read/listen. And narrator George Weightman deserves five stars too. Perfectly paced, and how he remembered all the slightly nuanced accents, I don't know. Recommended.
