Perfect period detail and rapturously romantic, from one of the best-known and beloved historical novelists of all time.

William the Bastard, base-born son of the Duke of Normandy, must fight the king of France to regain his Duchy.

Spurned in love by the lovely Princess Matilda, the fighting duke dares to take a whip to her in her own father's palace, before making her his bride.

Thwarted by the Saxon Earl Harold of a promise of the throne of England, William the Conqueror sails to Hastings to claim the king's crown and sceptre for his own.

A history rather than a novel but wonderfully researched and reconstructed. William was a force of nature. The narrator is superb.

Unrelenting

I have been reading and now listening to Georgette Heyer books for decades. Audible have removed the versions I have and they are being replaced with versions with new narrators - I find this completely unnessary. However, the range now includes some books that weren’t available previously and which I have never read, The Conqueror being one of them.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. This historical facts seemed well researched, as is usual, but they were encased in a story that was very enjoyable. Looking forward to My Lord John, another I have never read.

Thoroughly enjoyed

I am a huge fan of Georgette Heyer, but The Conqueror was one I never enjoyed as much as others. I decided to give it another chance and, thanks to George Weightman’s beautiful narration, I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed the story this time round.
I hope George Weightman continues to narrate Heyer books - a most enjoyable and pleasant voice to listen to.

Fantastic Narration!

This is a book I could come back to again and again and keep finding new nuances every time. Fabulous, clever Heyer! You need to concentrate when listening to it though, this is not a trifling romance, though romance it lacks not. Heyer paints an evocative picture of a time in history.

Beautiful and highly engaging

That awful photograph to advertise the audiobook which made it look like a cheap bodice ripper

Excellent narration
