War hero Alistair Carsington really really loves women, and his romantic impulses have landed him in nearly as much danger as the Battle of Waterloo. To avoid his usual temptations and perhaps even repay the friend who saved his life, he's exiled himself to a place far from civilization - Derbyshire - in winter! Fate laughs at his good intentions and drives him straight into conflict with Miss Mirabel Oldridge, his match in tenacity, intelligence, and deviousness - who also happens to be wildly irresistible.

Mirabel Oldridge is already overwhelmed by her responsibilities, caring for her brilliant but eccentric father and the family lands, constantly on the verge of trouble. She does not need a devastatingly handsome, too smart, and empathetic aristocrat reminding her that she has a heart and a delectable body, so unfashionably clothed that he claims undressing her is a moral obligation. Now neither of them can resist temptation - how can something so wrong feel so very wonderful?

I loved the narration. And found the story very interesting especially the background of progress - canals, railways and use of machines. Loved the hero and heroine and their wise parents….

Nice to have such a noble hero.

There’s nothing extraordinary about the story. Perfect for when you don’t want to think too hard.
I might have enjoyed it more if the narration wasn’t so horrible. What’s with the cadence?! It was distracting. I stopped listening and switched to only reading. I’ll steer clear of this narrator from now on. I might read the other books in the series, though

It’s a nice story, the narration, though…

Have to say I adore Kate Reading's narration, she always makes a book seem alive to me. Enjoyed this one as I enjoy all Chase/Reading offerings. I felt I had to defend Kate's narration as people seemed to dislike it and I couldn't understand why.

Lovely story

Kate Reading's pithy narration does this entertaining audiobook full justice. Her interpretations of the dry humour and engaging characters are perfectly pitched.

Fun and enjoyable
