Özet
John Mortonson is dead. His body lies in the parlour in an open coffin with a glass plate over the face, and the mourners file past in the heavy air of a summer afternoon. His widow and daughter sit close by, weeping as the service goes on around them.
The daughter looks down into the coffin. What she sees there makes her scream, and the lid is closed very quickly afterwards. The story is barely two pages long, and the single image at its centre has unsettled readers for more than a century.
A miniature masterpiece of grotesque horror, John Mortonson’s Funeral shows Ambrose Bierce at his most economical and most cruel: no explanation, no comfort, and one unforgettable detail.
Listen to the complete, unabridged audiobook of this classic short tale of terror by the master of American dark fiction.
