A chilling and heartbreaking story of a young girl’s loss and resilience by Peter Heller, the best-selling author of The Dog Stars, The Painter, and The River.

In this riveting tale of looming apocalypse, Pup is living off the grid for the summer with her parents on an island off the coast of Maine, when all three of them face the hardest decisions of their lives. Across the water one night they can see homes burning and hear gunfire. Pup and her parents, with their goat and chickens and garden and their dog, Opey, have no contact with the mainland, except for boat runs into town. When their friends, two women biologists living on a tiny island two miles away, bring them news of the civil unrest up and down the coast and talk of secession, Pup’s father agrees to go into town with the women in their boat to check on things. It’s a fateful decision that will force Pup to make choices she could never have imagined, and that will alter the world for everyone.

That was great until the ending. A little bit more would’ve been better. Scary for sure 😦

Unassumingly invites you into to a harrowing and well wrought tale that highlights fears many of us have for the future and the rise of 'patriots' and bigots. As many others have noted, it does stop abruptly. So much so that it's jarring and feels unfinished. I didn't need an answer or the rest of the protagonist's story or lack thereof, but the abrupt end doesn't really feel like even a sudden ending. Otherwise, brilliant and wonderfully performed.

Great, if Abrupt

I was really enjoying this, narration is good, you really felt for the child then it just...stops! No resolution,no clue as to how she manages, just done.

Disappointing

I actually really did like this story, told by the young daughter of the family. Intriguing tale and was really getting into it.. but for me and this is only personal, I didn’t like the end. But I got it on a freebie, so it was ok although I do know I will not listen again as I do some other audiobooks. But this is very subjective to me, give it a go.

Good little story but..

Great story. Draws you in. You encounter various characters and but in all but one instance (the unlucky Bob) the story literally stops dead... leaving you with absolutely zero conclusion as to what has, hasn't or will happen to the characters you've been introduced to.

Conclusion? What a waste of my time. Disappointed in the extreme. Hint to author: Please finish your short story next time! 🙏🏻

What? Where's the ending?
