James Herbert was one of Britain’s greatest popular novelists and our #1 best-selling writer of chiller fiction. Widely imitated and hugely influential, he wrote 23 novels which have collectively sold over 54 million copies worldwide and been translated into 34 languages. Born in London in the forties, James Herbert was art director of an advertising agency before turning to writing fiction in 1975.

His first novel, The Rats, was an instant bestseller and is now recognised as a classic of popular contemporary fiction. Herbert went on to publish a new top ten best-seller every year until 1988. He wrote six more bestselling novels in the 1990s and three more since: Once, Nobody True and The Secret of Crickley Hall. Herbert died in March 2013 at the age of 69.

So great to read this haunted house gem set back in the late 80s in the days before mobile phones when you had to put silver coins into a public phone box to make a call. So of course back then it wasn’t so easy to call for help whilst being haunted by mysterious, unexplained, ghostly events as it would be now.....

The first of the David Ash Trilogy and an easy to become absorbed into horror read. I’m straight into the Second in the trilogy on the strength of this first.

A good, clear narrator makes for a superb, all round presentation.

I enjoyed this story, but there were some parts of it that did not make sense.
The scene with the clairvoyant in the theatre was a little muddled. I wasn’t sure who was saying what dialogue at one point.
Also, although the narrator, and indeed the author, were English, American words were used throughout (eg drapes for curtains) etc which was just odd. Also WHY is the word ‘grimace’ constantly pronounced as ‘GRIM-ACE’ instead of ‘GRIM-ISS’. ?? That was very silly.
But well worth a listen nonetheless.

Good ghost story, guessed the outcome early but excellent narrator. I will be listening to the others in this series.

Punchy supernatural chiller from scene superstar, James Herbert. The first book in a trilogy featuring paranormal investigator, David Ash, this is a lean, televisual take on the classic English Ghost Story that hits all the necessary beats with an unpretentious efficiency. We soon encounter the crumbling country pile with a tragic past, the enigmatic employer with a mysterious agenda, a kindly psychic who simply wants to help and, most importantly, a sceptical hero, driven to drink by guilt and trauma. To all these tropes Herbert adds a few nice touches that stop the book feeling hackneyed: Ash's terrified attempt to flee is unexpectedly realistic, and the sub-plot seeded at the end is spooky and has bite. Even the then contemporary '80s setting now seems distant and antiquated in a way that, although unintended, benefits the story.
At the risk of sounding patronising, Herbert's mass-market prose and clear plotting lend themselves well to the audiobook format. Steven Pacey does a fine job with the narration, his tone very appropriate for the period and mood; I liked his Claire Rayner impression for the psychic Edith, and the scene featuring the fake clairvoyant is particularly effective.
Occasionally, this can feel over familiar or a bit dated, but, for the most part, this is a guilt-free simple pleasure.
