David Ash, detective of the paranormal, is sent to the mysterious Comraich Castle, secluded deep in the Scottish countryside, to investigate a strange, high-profile case. A man has been found crucified in a locked room. The reports suggest that the cliff-top castle is being haunted.... Who or what is the reclusive hooded figure that Ash has seen from the window walking across the courtyard in the dead of night? What are the strange, animal-like sounds that come from the surrounding woods? And why are the castle's inhabitants so reluctant to talk about what they have seen? What Ash eventually discovers is truly shocking....

Featuring one of Herbert's best-loved characters, first encountered in The Ghosts of Sleath and Haunted, Ash is a ghost story like no other that will chill you to the marrow.

I have read some of the reviews on here and am shocked that people found the story to be worthy of only 1 star. Perhaps because this is one of my first Herbert titles, I am not as used to his 'better' works. But I really enjoyed this and the narration of the piece.

I thought it was a good story with vibrant characters that you either loved or hated quite clearly. Some things seemed to fall into place a little too easily. Most notably the entire storyline to do with Cedric Twigg. But besides that, I felt it flowed rather smoothly and certainly enjoyed listening to it.

Enjoyable listen

If you are intrigued by a good conspiracy theory then James Herbert could not have written this at a more appropriate time in his life. Easy to follow and exciting. Ash had me researching most of its characters. Which I assure you, I have never been so fascinated to do before. James Herbert ties in all the characters together and makes them appeal to you, whether good or bad. You find yourself routing for both sides. The characters both fictional and non fictional are portrayed with exceptionally fine detail, well rounded and bold. Steven Pacey does all of the characters proud with his talented voice. The classic horror and descriptive manner in which James Herbert writes his absorbing chilling scenes are even more delicious in Ash. Excellently read by Steven Pacey, the mood is set for wonderfully iconic horror scenes that you only wish horror movies could deliver so effortlessly. From the very start Ash has you wondering, just how much of this is true? Such a superb interweave of fact and fiction. With more than just the typical “things that go bump in the night” ghost story. This is a riveting journey of dark discovery, in which no stone is left unturned and every stone has a story to tell. Ash conveys many different perspectives. Including that of a fiercely secret organisation that makes the Free Masons look like a social networking group! It leaves you pondering, what really happened to...? All based around a beautifully creepy castle that is more of a sinister fortress, described in exquisite detail, with more history in its grounds than the National trusts complete portfolio. Exceptional, so cleverly thought of and brilliantly delivered. Ash liberates a captured mind and rescues perception. A highly recommend audio experience for all James Herbert fans and any fan of the macabre. Who like a gripping story line, with just a hint of romance and a touch of fable (or is it?)

A truly magnificent and memorable masterpiece, of the late great James Herbert (R.I.P)

A GREAT CONCEPT.The book takes Ash to a secret please, full of intrigue and corruption. The characters are believable. Several twists keep you listening. I love horror, and this keeps your interest. Slow to start, and too quick to end... classic book that keeps you thinking about where the rich disappear to ... if you love this then get The Passage as well, another great read.

fast and furious
