An Astra Militarum Audiobook

Physically and psychologically conditioned from childhood under the most horrific conditions imaginable, the Tempestus Scions are the Imperium's deadliest human soldiers – fearsome killers expected to follow their orders ruthlessly and without question.

LISTEN TO IT BECAUSE

Tempestor Traxel, star of the short story, Eradicant, returns to face off against an army of traitors and his own damaged consciousness. Can he overcome the toll that a lifetime of war has taken on his mind and fulfil his duty to the God-Emperor?

THE STORY

Led by the merciless Tempestor Traxel, the Scions of First Eradicant squad drop directly into the fires of a global civil war. Joined by a commissar who personifies the suffering of his past and facing a foe from the darkest days of the Imperium, Traxel's fracturing psyche places the entire world at risk.

On Rilis, Traxel will face the foe that broke him. This time, there is no price he will not pay.

Written by R. S. Wilt. Narrated by Andrew Wincott. Runtime 11 hours and 24 minutes approx.

The moment I heard the narrator's voice I thought immediately that I had heard this voice before somewhere and what'd you know it's the voice actor of Raphael from Baldur's Gate III! That was a pleasant surprise and I really like Wincott's voice. Unfortunately the story itself leaves a lot to be desired. Final Deployment is not only the weakest novel of the of the Astra Militarum series but also of all the Warhammer 40,000 novels that I've read so far. While it is a good novel explaining how the Scions, more specifically the First Eradicants, operate and what they're about, the characters were mostly flat and lacked depth and character growth. There were some morsels of personality and good scenes between the Scions but they were few and far between in the midst of a civil war with little breaks between enemy encounters. There was so many battle scenes that it felt almost exhausting. Roughly the first half of the book started promisingly but soon felt like a drag to read through. It wasn't until the Iron Warriors stepped into the story when it started to become more interesting and engaging, and every chapter where they were in were the most intriguing ones to read. The book was sometimes even frustrating to read because whenever something interesting I wanted to learn or know more about comes up, whether its characters' traumatic past, backgrounds, motivations or the antagonists' end-goals they're merely glanced at and then left unexplored as if they're not important enough to delve into because we got another battle scene coming.

A pretty decent story about an elite unit and its internal politics, too little iron within and too much filler for my taste, saved by the excellent narration of Mr Wincott

Good but….

I enjoyed this. Blasted through it when I was out walking the dog.

Engaging enough to keep me entertained and didn’t audiobook hop.

The story has some short falls. Some poor character moments but fairly minor didn’t stop me enjoying it.

All in all a strong book.

All in all a good book.
