Most homicides are young male on young male, and that's bad enough. But as a father of two daughters, DCI Bill Slider can't help but take it harder when the victim is a young woman. Rhianne Morgan, just 18, waiting for her A-level results, lies dead in her comfortable middle-class home in a nice, respectable area. Neighbours remember rows with her stepfather.

Schoolmates talk of a boyfriend humiliatingly dumped. Her best friend mentions an unnamed new boyfriend, who possibly provided her with drugs. But the back gate was open, and anyone could have walked in. Did she even know her assailant?

Secrets and lies flourished around this troubled teenager, a thicket of thorns Slider and his team must cut through to find the truth. Who killed Rhianne? As Slider's boss says, it's always the first person you suspect. Except when it isn't.

Well, as usual Slider and his team are on good form. Love the banter and the family life as well as the story line. Sadly we will have to wait far too long for the next instalment. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could have the next three in the series all at once. Now there’s an idea !

Excellent as usual

I've loved CHE's books for many years and listened to the first dozen+ in the Slider series three or four times, and I have enjoyed several more Bill Slider books since the fabulous 12 also. Easful Death, by contrast, is pretty bland, with three suspects all appearing early on, with not a lot of detective work involved in 'discovering' any of them - they almost fell into the team's laps, from which point the story galloped on to a quick and far too easy conclusion. An 'Easful Death' sums up this unexciting yarn, I certainly didn't lose any sleep over it.
The story was disappointingly simplistic, the usual sparkling repartee between Bill and Joanna was minimal, and the narrator, while very good in many ways, failed to distinguish between Slider and Atherton, so I genuinely could not tell who was speaking when they were together.
Sorry, Ms Harrod Eagles, I know you are a wonderful author, but not this time. Not for me.

Disappointing
