When it's one of your own, you pull out all the stops.

DCI Bill Slider and his team are plunged into a city-wide manhunt when the body of a police officer is found dumped in a canal. Murder is always treated seriously, but when the victim is a serving copper, the killer is going to find the whole London force on their tail – and there will be no let up until they're caught.

Colleagues say PC Peter Bentley was a quiet bloke who kept himself to himself. But as Slider and Atherton dig deeper, it becomes clear that this likeable bobby had secrets. Was he involved in something that got out of control or had something from his past come back to bite him?

Soon, the hardships of 'the Job' and the office politics at play make for an intriguing mystery that, this time, feels too close to home...

This is once again a most enjoyable experience, as all her Slider books. The characters, story and narrator are excellent. There is not a word wasted and if you know West London it adds to the enjoyment of ‘travelling around’ it. But you don’t need to know. Plus, unlike so many books, there is real humour in the dialogue between the characters. I do hope there are more to come.

Excellent as ever

I’ve been looking forward to the next Bill Slider book, and this one doesn’t disappoint. I enjoy the puns in the chapter headings, the humour and banter between the characters in Slider’s team. (I love Porson’s malapropisms!)
The narration is brilliant! Having attempted, myself, to read a story aloud, I’ve discovered how difficult it is to make the characters come alive using the different voices and accents while making sense of the storyline.
The plot, as always, is very clever keeping one gripped right to the end. I listened to this shortly after retiring to bed and must confess to dropping off to sleep after a busy day and missing bits, ‘coming to’ to discover different characters whose introductions I missed. However, Deadly Force is a thoroughly good listen and I look forward to filling in the gaps.

A gripping storyline interspersed with humour!
