Kate Ardleigh is everything the Victorian English gentlewoman is not - outspoken, free-thinking, American...and a writer of the frowned upon penny dreadfuls. Soon after her arrival in Essex, England, a body is unearthed in a nearby archeological dig - and Kate has the chance to not only research her latest story but to begin her first case with amateur detective Sir Charles Sheridan.

This had some interesting plot lines, even if they did end up being red herrings! I’d love to have seen the theme of unhappy servants and the risk of threat from within taken further but in general the story was pretty satisfying. None of the major characters felt totally formed or captivating but I’ll give the second in the series a go.

Good but not great.

The storyline was thoroughly engaging throughout and the narration was perfectly matched. If you enjoy crime set in this period then I recommend this book without hesitation.

Drama, but not impossible or over done. Realistic characters with depth and flaws. A multitude of possible directions for the tale to go. A definite Keeper for me.
