I really love the way the authors weave real life people into their fictional narrative, and the way scientific advances are introduced. Conan Doyle would surely have liked them too.

These books get more and more enjoyable

Helen Johns is an excellent narrator with a good grasp of accents. I like this series because the characters are well drawn and the mysteries are interesting. The problem I have with them is the authors seem to forget what they wrote into their characters' storylines in the last book! The timelines don't make sense ("let's tell my family and get married immediately!"... next book, nearly a year later, they are only 3 months married and never got around to telling his family about the bride's existence in the intervening 6 months somehow, so now they've all become estranged). The constable who was supposed to have either taken a big promotion and moved or bought a farm and given up policing, shows up, a year and a bit later, as still the village constable. A maid hasn't aged in 2 years. I know they were written 30 years ago and it's a moot point, but these things annoy me! 😂

Good historical details
