An isolated Swedish town. A deaf reporter terrified of nature. A dense spruce forest overdue for harvest. A pair of eyeless hunters found murdered in the woods.

It's week one of the Swedish elk hunt, and the sound of gunfire is everywhere. When Tuva Moodyson investigates the story that could make her career, she stumbles on a web of secrets that knit Gavrik town together.

Are the latest murders connected to the Medusa killings 20 years ago? Is someone following her? Why take the eyes? Tuva must face her demons and venture deep into the woods to stop the killer and write the story. And then get the hell out of Gavrik.

Well written and beautifully performed. I think most people will guess “whodunnit” and in that respect I think the ending could have been more exciting had the narrative broken from the first person to confirm the murderer’s identity to the reader and had us rooting for the hero as the book reaches its climax. But this is a minor niggle (and personal opinion) about a book that was a brilliant travelling companion on a long journey.

Very good indeed

It takes a little while to get into the story, but the scenery and descriptions are beautiful. I feel that could’ve been a few hours shorter, but still I found a compulsive listen.

Good, but dragged out

Usually my choice in Audible is American authors like James Lee Burke or British procedurals and I only decided to use a credit on this as there were so many intriguing reviews. After about five minutes I was willing to admit I had wasted my money. The quirky narration and off beat setting was not enticing but I carried on listening and am really glad I did. The story just grows on you to the extent that I became totally wrapped up in it. My only complaint is the occasional use of the f word. I am no prude,in many novels the use of swearing is integral to the characterisation but in this story, for some reason,it seems so incongruous that I found it quite irritating. Don’t let that minor criticism put you off, well worth a try.

Glad I persevered

either mysteries are getting worse or I'm really good at figuring them out, either way this is the second obvious murderer I've read this week.

interesting but predictable
