Red Snow is the eagerly awaited follow-up to Dark Pines, selected for ITV's Zoe Ball Book Club.

Two bodies.

One suicide. One cold-blooded murder. Are they connected? And who's really pulling the strings in the small Swedish town of Gavrik?

Two coins.

Black Grimberg liquorice coins cover the murdered man's eyes. The hashtag #Ferryman starts to trend as local people stock up on ammunition.

Two weeks.

Tuva Moodyson, deaf reporter at the local paper, has a fortnight to investigate the deaths before she starts her new job in the south. A blizzard moves in.

Residents, already terrified, feel increasingly cut off. Tuva must go deep inside the Grimberg factory to stop the killer before she leaves town for good. But who's to say the Ferryman will let her go?

I’m not sure if there can be a more weird town and a more “off” collection of people than in the one depicted in this book! Still, the author adds layer upon layer of humanity, depression, sadness, weirdness until the end comes a blessed relief from all that tension and uncertainty. I gave 4 stars because of, again, the use of unnecessarily disgusting details (the use of offal, hair in the mouth while eating, and soon). I also gave 4 stars to the narrator, for the absolutely depressing tone used throughout when voicing the narrator. I understand that this adds to the atmosphere but it makes it downright morbid in its delay between the words, the low tone of voice, and so on.

Dark, depressing but brilliantly layered

bit slow to start but the narrator was perfect. Well written with good atmosphere. recommended

loved it

The descriptions of the icy cold, snowy weather, and the resultant dangerous driving conditions are somewhat repetitive and start to become irritating. Although these descriptions add atmosphere, they are too dominant, in my opinion, and overshadow murders and interaction between key characters. Life seems very miserable in North Sweden! Nevertheless, a worthwhile read, and I will continue with others in the series.

A bit depressing

This was the perfect story for me
And the narrator's voice was just right.
She kept me interested
