A paladin, an assassin, a forger, and a scholar ride out of town. It's not the start of a joke, but rather an espionage mission with deadly serious stakes. T. Kingfisher's new novel begins the tale of a murderous band of criminals (and a scholar), thrown together in an attempt to unravel the secret of the Clockwork Boys, mechanical soldiers from a neighboring kingdom that promise ruin to the Dowager's city.

If they succeed, rewards and pardons await, but that requires a long journey through enemy territory, directly into the capital. It also requires them to refrain from killing each other along the way! At turns darkly comic and touching, Clockwork Boys puts together a broken group of people trying to make the most of the rest of their lives as they drive forward on their suicide mission.

What a sweet and enduring journey to see the lore of the later books' being formed and to get to know the gnoles before the developed into what they are today. The characters in this book has felt the most human than all of the others. They are so essentially human that it is impossible not to love them and be frustrated with them at the same time. can't wait to get back to the later books to follow the ripples of this book and the sequel. In regards to the narration: it deeply erks me when I hear the faint buzz of your smartwatch then I'm trying to imagine a broody knight. And at the end somewhere there was a frase the was repeated back to back. it's just not very thoroughly edited I think. But the voices for the characters were enjoyable and realistic. oh and this narrator pronounces Archenhold different than the other books' narrators. but I'm nitpicking now.

All these characters felt very human

Really quirky characters, I really liked the relationships between everyone though I wish the two men had made better friends especially towards the end. Liked the romance. The actress was brought back for the second book which I was really pleased about!

This actress was the best

Good book. Good story. Good characters. Enjoyable. Fun. Unexpected. A smidge of tension. A bit of romance but not a lot. Not for children, but not excessively so

Good book

I'm late 40s, but I love T Kingfishers' imagination. All the details, it's the closest I've found to compare with Harry Potter series for imagination and creativity. I found the tale so well written that I went off and purchased the second before even finishing the first.

Excellent imagination
