Piper is a lich-doctor, a physician who works among the dead, determining causes of death for the city guard's investigations. It's a peaceful, if solitary profession . . . until the day when he's called to the river to examine the latest in a series of mysterious bodies, mangled by some unknown force.

Galen is a paladin of a dead god, lost to holiness and no longer entirely sane. He has long since given up on any hope of love. But when the two men and a brave gnole constable are drawn into the maze of the mysterious killer, it's Galen's job to protect Piper from the traps that await them.

He's just not sure if he can protect Piper from the most dangerous threat of all . . .

Reading like an Indiana Jones adventure in a mysterious underground, trap-filled archaeological wonder, in a world full of magic and romance, where the power of love and friendship wins the day. Believably radical, theoretically untouchable villain; fantastic protagonists with depth of emotion and unusual abilities, and an adorable gnole friend.
Joel is a fantastic reader as always with the previous books. I feel in the midst of the action, maybe off to one side, with his reading and the author's writing.

Excellent Mystery Romance

it was a wonderful book. it is full of adventure and romance and beloved characters from previous books. I do however hope that the cliffhanger is elaborated on in the next book because I will lose my shit if it is not. LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE the development of the relationship in the epilogue. but that cliffHANGER!!!!!!

it is goooooooood!

A well written light fantasy with some horror elements, a good grasp of the emotional side of working in medicine and believable world building. There is plenty here to explore, while not getting too bogged down, and I’m looking forward to reading more.

Far from, as other reviewers have suggested, a wall to wall gay smut fest destined to condemn the reader to the seventh circle, this is a queer romance as real as the first two books with similarly graphic (e.g, not particularly graphic) depictions of sex. Perhaps previous reviewers have more problems with gay men than sex, but they still finished the book, didn’t they. Given the blatant queer positive themes in the previous two books, and Swordheart, I wonder if they were really paying attention.

That this trilogy came about when the author got distracted by an idea while writing another book makes my ADHD brain feel incredibly happy, seen, and understood.

Excellent Queer Positive Trilogy

Another great story, narration excellent still, plenty of ‘particularly’ gems littered throughout 😁. Cliffhanger makes sure I will get the next one too!

Excellent series, continues strong
