Charlie Muffin, an endearing spy, irritates his new boss and co-workers because of his appearance and age, but that doesn't stop them from taking the credit for his accomplishments. But Charlie perseveres and proves to be right over and over again in this story of the capture of a KGB general who is running a spy network in England.

Hayward Morse ably creates voices for each of the many characters, using a variety of convincing accents, though once in a while he doesn't shift to the correct voice. He is especially effective in his timing and makes the humor of certain situations evident. Through all the plot twists, there is never any hint of the surprising outcome.

If you're a fan of the Harry Palmer films, I think you'll enjoy this.

A great little spy story that doesn't seem to be well remembered. Came across this originally through the BBC radio production first, then listened to this audiobook. Both are excellent, although I found the narration here a touch distracting at times when the narrator voice would read out the inner voice of characters in his normal posh voice, rather than in the voice of the characters themselves, which he does an admiral job otherwise of making sound distinct . Looking forward to trying out the rest of the Charlie Muffin books.

An unappreciated spy thriller

if you wonder about the world being different then to now, it isn't.. not surprising really cos human nature doesn't really change... Worth listening to - and remember - treat your staff well...

A good insight into a nasty world but you are on Charlie's side all the time. I read this one first so now i have to listen to the first one second but it will probably be great

Great! Clever story. Well read

Enjoyable spy romp with mostly credible characters. Had to suspend disbelief a few times - speed of transport etc - but took me back to the 70s days of old-school MI5 and 6 governance. Narrator please note Islay is pronounced ‘Eye-lah’ and not ‘Is-lay!’

Nice throwback to the Cold War
