Who will steal the greatest prize of Empire?
South America’s Spanish colonies are in a ferment of popular unrest. Rumors of a treasure hoard of Spanish silver spur Thomas Kydd’s commander-in-chief, Commodore Popham, to assemble a makeshift invasion fleet and launch a bold attack on Buenos Aires. The British invasion force wins a battle against improbable odds, but soon finds itself surrounded by a hostile population. Now Kydd's men must face resistance and the betrayal of their closest allies…©2012 Julian Stockwin (P)2012 AudioGO Ltd Historical Fiction Kurgu Latin Amerika Afrika

A series to which my return has been long overdue. I've been a fan of this series from the very start and it was excellent to spend some time listening to Rodska's perfectly suited narration of Stockwin's characters. This actually turned out to be one of my favourites in the series!

Plenty of action, clever tactics and Renzi's latest attempts to win back respectability take an amusing turn. Unusually there is no great romantic interest for Kydd to be distracted by and I have to confess to not missing that regular staple of his ongoing story.

There is of course the usual demonstration of Stockwin's vast knowledge of his subject which is never allowed to bog the story down.

If you haven't tried this series yet it is very well worth taking the books in the right order rather than jumping in but this could still be enjoyed as a standalone adventure.

In brief this is a most excellent continuation of one of my favourite series and I'd recommend it to anyone interested in the genre.

Stockwin and Rodska - A Guilty Pleasure

One of the weaker books of the series in my opinion. Kydd spends most of the book on land feeling a bit trapped so the book didn't have the usual swashbuckling fun. Also Renzi didn't get much attention in this one either spending most of the book off stage.

Good but one of the weaker Kydd books

A wonderful mixture of real events and characters interacting with fiction.

As with all Kydd novels, the reading of Christian Rodska is superb.

Great historical novel

I brought this on sale and is is my first book in this series. Interesting concept and the author is clearly well researched on the period. The narration is good and brings the story to life. I will see if the next book is just as good.

Enjoyable

one of the weaker kydd books. However as with all of them the subject matter and performance pull it through. Still a must read if you are a fan of the series
