On Staten Island, off Cape Horn at the far tip of South America, the Argentine government has built a lighthouse in the loneliest place it could find. Three keepers are landed to man it, and the ship that brought them sails away. Vasquez is the eldest of the three.
They do not know that a gang of pirates under a man named Kongre has been using the island as a base, living in a cave and plundering the wrecks that the coast provides. A lighthouse that works is the last thing they want. Soon two of the keepers are dead, the light goes dark, and Vasquez is left alone on the island with a crew of killers who believe nobody is left to stop them.
What follows is Verne at his leanest: no science lecture, no eccentric professor, barely a digression. A man hides in the rocks, watches the light go out and a ship break up in the dark, and waits for a chance that may not come. The novel appeared in 1905, the year Verne died, in a version revised by his son Michel. This new translation is complete and unabridged.
