Story23
Can forests think? Do dogs dream? In this astonishing book, Eduardo Kohn challenges the very foundations of anthropology, calling into question our central assumptions about what it means to be human - and thus distinct from all other life forms. Based on four years of fieldwork among the Runa of Ecuador's Upper Amazon, Kohn draws on his rich ethnography to explore how Amazonians interact with the many creatures that inhabit one of the world's most complex ecosystems.

Eventually, her ancestors began appearing in her dreams, pleading with her to return and embrace her own culture. She listened. At the end of December 1980, Airman First Class George Conway was unexpectedly moved to morning duty, otherwise known as Alpha Flight. He suspected that something had occurred the night before but no one would tell him anything. Even his so-called friends were keeping silent about it. Although the situation seemed strange, he decided to let it go since he'd been stationed at RAF Bentwaters and its sister base RAF Woodbridge for a year. It wasn't until 1994 when he saw Robert Stack presenting an episode of Unsolved Mysteries about Rendlesham Forest that he found out what really happened.

If the history of the Earth were compressed down to a year, our species would arise in the last thirty minutes or so of the final hour. But life itself is not such a late arrival: It has existed on Earth for something like 3.7 billion years—most of our planet’s history and over a quarter of the age of the universe (as far as we can tell). What have these organisms—bacteria, animals, plants, and the rest—done in all this time? In Living on Earth, the philosopher Peter Godfrey-Smith proposes a new way of understanding how the actions of living beings have shaped our planet.
