I have looked forward to listening to this book on an evening and I am sure I will listen again soon. I have listened to Tales of a Country Parish several times.
I love the mixture of parish life, thoughts and some Christian teaching which blend together so well. A joy to listen to!

At once engaging, thoughtful, and uplifting, this book weaves philosophical and theological insight with warmth and humanity. While some of the philosophy and theology lay beyond my full understanding — they are, nevertheless, painstakingly researched by the author — the narrative remains grounded in the heart-warming anecdotes of Colin HP’s life. The book offers a perceptive reflection on how we, drifting through our often disconnected lives and fearful of “the bear,” may cling to identity — particularly identity politics — as a false source of comfort. I was deeply honoured that my dear late mother features among its pages. Thank you for writing this book Colin.

A book for our time

There aren't many audio books that make me want to get in the car and sit in a traffic jam on the A34. This is one of them. In fact I'd happily go around the M25 five times to ensure I could listen to it uninterrupted from start to finish*

Colin shares with us a deeply personal view of how he has answered the perennial questions that seem to rattle around our heads as we grow up and get louder as the years pass by. At some stage, for some - if not all of us - they eventually make us stop in our tracks (metaphorically and quite literally in Colin's case, in the Savernake Forest) and ask ourselves what it's all for. And why.

You might think a man of the cloth such as the Reverend Heber-Percy might have found all the answers from a higher source. Well I'm not going to give any spoilers for whether that's the case or not. What I will reveal is that he takes the reader/listener on a wonderfully quirky journey through the moments of truth in his family and working life, mapped against the majestic specimens that are dotted around the ancient and spiritual Savernake Forest.

Well worth a listen and losing yourself in a forest (or on a trunk road) with this beautiful, thoughtful and witty meditation on how being lost - whether in grief, nature, or uncertainty - can open the path to renewal and deeper understanding.

*I tend to listen to audio books at x1.5 speed so probably more like 3 and half times around the M25.

Wonderfully quirky journey of self-discovery

Initially I thought that it was going to be too philosophical, too esoteric but gradually as I got more into it I learnt a great deal, followed up on quotes and some that I had never heard of. I think I began to fear that CHP would lose his Christan faith especially after having just finished tales of a country parson. CHP's 2 books are the only ones I have listened to one after the other and then immediately done the same again.

I love wandering in the forests and local woodlands so I thought this book would be perfect. wasn't quite what I was expecting, more of the authors thoughts on fitting in, and his life rather than actual forest wandering... admittedly I only listened to half of the book as it just wasn't engaging me on the right level.
perhaps I'll try again another time.
