Summary

Beneath a quiet village, dark crimes lie buried.

When decomposed human remains are discovered in a suitcase behind a locked door in the home of an elderly man, Detective Karen Hart thinks the facts speak for themselves. That is, until she finds the warning: It’s time to pay for your crime.

The body belongs to a former teacher, Oliver Fox, who vanished from the village thirty years earlier. Hart’s instincts tell her there is something untoward about this rural Lincolnshire community—especially when she uncovers evidence suggesting that, although Fox was a victim, he certainly wasn’t innocent. As the extent of Fox’s crimes becomes apparent and the web of lies continues to unravel, almost nobody in the village is above suspicion.

When there are whispers of child abuse in connection with the case, it’s clear someone is willing to do anything to keep the sinister truth buried. Can Hart find the culprit before more lives are lost?

Good story , irritating narration

Narrator has a lovely story telling voice but her attempts at accents and different tones are distracting. Her Scottish accent is way off and all her Lincolnshire voices especially the male ones are nasal and slow, and do not represent anyone I know in Lincoln.
This distracts from the story, which is actually a good one.

Another brilliant book in this series

Loved this book, I am currently bingeing on this author as love the twists and turns in the story lines. Highly recommend this series of books.
The narrator is good but I would urge her to do more research on the local pronunciation of the towns / villages in the books she reads. It Won’t spoil it for someone that doesn’t know the area but as a local it was frustrating.
I am just about to download the next book and can’t wait to listen to it.

Story good, Performance dire.

Honestly unsure why this lady was hired again to ruin this author's work.

Another good story (slightly worrying if it is a true representation of who is let into the police force), but nice flowing plot line.

Great story....shame about the narration.

Great story, as was the previous one in the series, but unfortunately the listening experience was ruined by the narration. The narrator has a lovely voice of her own but she cannot do regional accents....at least not a Lincolnshire one & her Scottish accent made me laugh out loud & cringe in equal measure....it was that bad. Added to which she made several mistakes with the storyline, which had I not been reading with Whispersync could have got confusing. I’d really like to read more by this author but preferably without this narrator.

Enjoyable Listen

I have to say, the narration of this second book is so much more improved on than the first in this series. I have them all in my library, and felt I ought to give the second a chance, as I enjoyed the actual story of the first in the series. The narration on the first book was utterly dreadful, but on beginning to listen to this second book, I found that actually the narration had vastly improved.

I enjoyed the story, I like the characters though sometimes you find yourself thinking what adult speaks like that, in the way the narrator chooses to say things when characters are having conversation. but it is definitely more bearable and easy on the ear to listen to.

The actual story was intriguing and I enjoyed it.

Great storyline

Great follow up book, continuing the police work of DS Butler and the team. Really enjoyed it. Looking forward to book 3.
You can read this as a book on its own - you don’t need to have read book 1 first, but why wouldn’t you? That’s great too.
