About this listen

GONE

When the body of a young woman is discovered in a field near Reading, it is linked to a similar discovery five years earlier. Both women had lived in or near Bristol, both had boarded a train at Temple Meads bound for London, but never reached their destination, and both were found murdered within a few miles of each other. The cold case review team in Bristol, headed by DCI John Meredith, takes on the case.

With few leads to go on, and the passage of time, it was always going to be a tough case to solve. But with the team shorthanded, and Meredith’s personal life in freefall, the team questions if Meredith will be around to see the case through, and if their department can survive.

GONE is book sixteen in the Meredith & Hodge series.

I was extremely surprised by Patsy‘s behaviour but not at all by Meredith‘s. In this story we follow the murder of two women and the life of a third hangs on the balance. There is a brilliant backstory between Patsy and Meredith that keeps you captivated. The end was good and the story was interesting. Overall this was probably my favourite Meredith and Hodge story.

One of my favourite Meredith books

I found this a hard book to review, much as I found it emotionally hard to listen to. On the one hand it’s very well written and takes the reader/listener into the story so well that you feel like you are there with the CCRT team throughout their investigations and their personal lives. It's also expertly narrated and easy to listen to.
On the other hand, being a big softie, I found it emotionally draining listening to my favourite characters having a hard time in their private lives. Having listened to every book in the series the characters actually feel like family, which is quite an achievement for any writer to manage but one which this author did with ease. That does mean though, that for me, when Meredith and co have a bad time it almost hurts like it would if a family member were going through it. Like I said, I’m a big softie.
Anyway, I had to stop part way through and listen to something else as I found the story a little upsetting, not something that happens to me often when reading fiction but a testament to how real the characters are portrayed and how important they have become to me. Because of this though I didn’t enjoy the story as much as previous ones due to the sad storyline.

I hope the next book repairs the fractures introduced in this one but that remains to be seen.

Really enjoyed the next book in the series, very sad that Patsy left Meredith, I do hope there is a good ending for them. The cold case review team had to put their heads together for this case, but they got there in the end. Narration was brilliant and added to the storyline.

I am really hooked on this series of from MK Turner. Gets you thinking on the story and trying to figure out who the culprits are. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
