About this listen

Faye Longchamp is overjoyed to be paid to do archaeological work she would have done anyway - excavating a site that was once her family's. But that joy ends abruptly when intruders break into a dear friend's house and leave him dead among the scattered remains of Faye's artifacts.

There seems to be no motive at all for the vicious crime...unless the thieves were aware of the fabulous emerald he had been holding minutes before his death. But the open wall safe is untouched, and choice artifacts are still in their cases. Only Faye's field notes are missing.

Faye seeks out the story behind the mysterious emerald. How was her fieldwork connected to her friend's death? The key to all her questions must be buried in the field notes now held by the killers. Now it is only a matter of time before they come for Faye.

Critic reviews

"Faye's capable fourth is a charming mixture of history, mystery, and romance." ( Kirkus Reviews)

Loved this one, and can’t wait to read the next one.
MAE makes her characters as vulnerable as they are strong and unpredictable. Captured my imagination and kept me reading. And I love the historical interlacing. Read it!

Another cracking tale!

I am so happy that I found Faye Longchamp and Joe Wolf Mantooth among the soil of North America. I wouldn't say they are thrillers exactly, but they are beautifully crafted mysteries and she writes beautifully, with a certain amount of poetry. This is unusual in this genre. As a British person I have found the history and racial relations of North America fascinating as well.
I think this one is actually my favourite so far.

Another day another book in which our archaeologist heroine trespasses on other people’s land, fails to do the work she’s got grant-funding for, gets very snippy about the 200 year old mansion she owns and gets people around her killed. Cracking read!

The world’s dodgiest archaeologist rides again.
