Summary

Drake Morgan, MD, neurosurgeon, bass player, philanthropist - Dominant. He doesn't do girlfriends, he doesn’t do sleepovers, and he certainly doesn't do breakfast in bed the morning after. He has his surgical slate at New York Presbyterian, he has a charitable foundation providing surgical tools to hospitals in Africa, he has his Brit Invasion cover band, Mersey, and he has his secret life as a Dominant in Manhattan's BDSM community.

Into bondage, D/s and the occasional dungeon scene, Drake keeps every part of his life separate, the divisions between them neat and tidy. His weeks are filled with surgeries, music, and D/s sex, and none of the well-planned and scheduled parts of his life intersect. That is until Kate McDermott crosses his path and screws everything up. Now, nothing is neat and tidy anymore, for Drake is smitten, and things are going to get messy....

Perfect for fans of Christian Grey

Drake Restrained is a dark, passionate story, perfect for fans of Fifty Shades of Grey. This audiobook is a retelling of the author's previous novel, The Agreement, from the hero's perspective, but you do not need to have listened to the other version first.

When I picked up this audiobook I was expecting it to be a real tonic, after all it purports to be everything I keep saying I want in a book of this type. I don't think I've reviewed a steamy book without mentioning how much I like having the male POV included, so knowing that this story is told through Drake's eyes meant that it held my attention from the start. I was excited to see that he's a handsome, talented neurosurgeon, as I've swooned over many a fictional doctor in my time. That he's also a little older than the heroine and loves classic British soft rock was the icing on the cake.

I was also looking forward to it because I love the narrator, Jack Calihan, and knew he would be the ideal choice for a character like Drake. Throw in a smattering of Calihan purring his now-infamous "Good girl..." and I suddenly didn't mind at all that this audiobook was 15 hours long.

Unfortunately, the more I listened, the clearer it became that there were several major flaws in this novel, with some of them being impossible to ignore. The thing I think many listeners will struggle with the most is Drake's behaviour, especially in the early part of the book. I think there's a responsibility when writing this type of book to be careful not to romanticise abusive behaviour, and be clear about what is actually part of the Lifestyle and when someone is crossing a line.

Though a lot of time was given over to explaining Drake's motivation from a D/s perspective, it would not - as I understand it - be considered best practice within the community.

It all made it really difficult to like Drake, and even tougher to be attracted to him, which was mind-boggling given that on paper he ticks almost every box on my pick'n'mix romantic-hero wishlist. I did warm to him as the story unfolded, but it never really felt as if the listener truly got inside his head. It often appeared that he was simply narrating the story rather than living and breathing it. The intimate scenes that I expected to really delve into his pleasure and his experience often shied away from much detail. It also finishes on a fade-to-black, which feels like quite a whimper to end on after investing so much time in a story.

Still, everything I've noted so far is subjective, and others may well like the fact that Drake will not take no for an answer and that the intimate scenes dial back the heat a little. Romance novels, and especially steamy ones, cannot possibly please everyone because we each have different limits and peccadilloes.

The thing that really made this audiobook difficult for me to listen to was the clumsy and repetitive writing. I appreciate that I'm especially picky when it comes to certain aspects of storytelling, but after listening to sentences like "She stood in front of me, her face turned away as if what I'd said was too hard to face," I really don't think I'm being too hard on this book.

The story and characters have been fairly well developed, but it felt like I was listening to a beta-read; technically the components are there and in the right order, but the basic storytelling is lacking. This is also demonstrated by the odd chapter at the end where the protagonists summarise, in detail, the timeline of events that we have just listened to.

Regrettably, it appears that I'm going to leave Drake and Katherine feeling rather conflicted about their story. Now that I have come to know them, I'm intrigued by how they will fare in their next adventure, but I found their first outing tough going. Overall I think that this book would be perfect for fans of Fifty Shades of Grey by EL James, especially those who enjoyed the books from Christian's perspective. Anyone who struggled with "those books", as Drake calls them, may find this series challenging for very similar reasons.

Fabulous listen!

Having read the books from both Kate and Drake's POV I really looked forward to listening to Drake tell his side. So good! Jack Calihan captures the feel if Drake really well and has just the right kind of depth and sexiness to his voice. Just fabulous! And there's more!! What more can I ask for! 💖💖

Drake Restrained

I listened to The Agreement a couple of years ago (which is basically the same story but told in Kate's point of view) which I loved so when I saw this book told in Drake's point of view, I knew I had to listen to it. I remembered the basic plot from The Agreement but I loved hearing Drake's side of the story. Jack Calihan did a great job bringing this story to life.

Life of a Dom

This book gives you the insight of a Dom and was very refreshing. I usually read from the woman’s POV and this was written very well it was a nice change. Jack really does have a fantastic perfect voice for a Dom. Low gravely and very commanding.

Not your typical dominant male character

I want to start out with my favorite part about this story is the fact that we have a dominant male who is in the DS lifestyle but he's not perfect. I found it refreshing to see the growth of the male character and him not being your typical alpha male. I found the story to also be an interesting listen for the fact that it was told from the males point of view. so if you're looking for a story that has D/S relationship in it from the males point of view and where you see a lot of growth from him this is the book from you.

Promising but long start to trilogy

This is the first book of S.E.Lund’s that I have read or listened so this telling from Drake’s point of view was all new to me. I must admit I found the story needed editing as there didn’t feel like 15 hours of substance, too much repetition and the story continues in 2 more books. That being said I thought Jack Calihan did a good job with the narration and bringing the characters to life. I received this audio via Audiobook Obsession.

Drake... I did NOT like him much till late in the book!

I almost didn’t finish the book because Drake made me so angry!!! Not really.... he just ticked me off..... a lot!

Katherine is smart and funny and submissive and should per perfect for his life. But he won’t let her in. He is very much a jerk with her.

I enjoyed everything about this book, but I yelled at Drake several times!!!

It is worth the listen!! Maybe because Katherine stands up and says she deserves more or maybe he gets his head out of his butt... you’ll have to listen to find out!!

Jack Calihan does s great job on this! He’s very pleasant to listen to!!

From Drakes POV

I enjoyed this series very much. I loved that this story was told only in Drakes POV. When I read the other books, I always wanted to get inside of his mind. He is a little arrogant, but what high paid talented doctor is not. This is amazing add to the series. You don’t want to miss out. As always enjoy Jack Calihan’s voice and the way he can preform.

Great Audible Listen🎧 💖Drake Morgan, MD💖

This book mirrors S.E. Lund’s “The Agreement” in her “Unrestrained Series”, it is told in Drake’s POV with new material, Drake’s thoughts, added. I think I liked Drake’s version more than Kate’s. Not because he is the more interesting person of the duo, but because we learn more of who he is in this story. I knew I was going to love this story right from the start, S.E. Lund ’s Drake had me at the 3 things you should understand about neurosurgeons: “Huge Balls, Laser-like focus. Hero Complex” Ha, arrogant much? The story flows nicely and as in the past book there is lots of drama, some angst and the start of a great romance. Yes, there is some kink, mild D/s as well as plenty of emotions.

I listened to the Audible edition, Jack Calihan is a wonderful narrator and voice performer. He brings the characters to life, gives each their own voice and personality. You can hear the emotions of the characters & the drama of the story in his performance. I loved his take on Drake, he gave him heart and he nailed his alpha Dom persona too. He is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for this great listen🎧

Thanks again 🎧AudiobookObsession #AudiobookObsession #AudiobookObsessionReviewer

Doctor by day Dom by night

He’s an older, regimented, successful, conservative Dom and She’s a smart, artistic, curious and forbidden.

The perspective of a middle aged, bass playing, Republican Neurosurgeon while not relatable to was an interesting perspective to experience. I just realized there is a companion series from Kate’s perspective that I would definitely be interested in checking out.

The narrator has just the right amount of bass in his voice to keep you listening all night.

Just like with every BDSM book you have to make the FSOG comparisons. But in this book there are several references to FSOG so don’t feel guilty for letting your mind go there. Like it’s a book they all read and brought new interest to the lifestyle which is found super relatable. I feel like this may go a little further into actual BDSM than 50. Also there is a Domme in this book that I find very interesting and would love to read more from her.

Sexy BDSM

I like this narrator and much of this story was HOT. The heroine is young, shy, and innocent and goes to full on BDSM pretty quick, though. And the shy innocent woman type is an annoying story for me. Having said that, I did enjoy the story and enjoyed the audible book. I got this as an audible book freebee from the narrator and this is a real review.

I LIKED IT!

I liked it! The narration was good. It will keep you entertained. This book reminded me of 50 Shades. The author does a good job with the character builds and plot. This story is told from Drake's POV. I look forward to reading The Agreement to get Kate's POV. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Hot sexy Doctor in the house!

Detailed look into the D/s life. With Drake’s POV expressed in this book. I really got into how the story develops over the book and believe it needed to be long to get in the emotions of Kate trying to protect Drake from her blackmailing friend.

The narration on this book was amazing. It’s my first listen to anything by Jack Calihan and I received it from Jack in exchange for my review.

Worth a credit definitely. Really Hawt sex scenes. And a HEA too!

Some Hot and Some Not So

Some of the scenes are on fire! Love how he explains everything to her and keeps her interest at peak. I wish there was a bit more of explaining abt the blackmail friend with a little more intensity to it! Narration was great, there were a few hiccups with the voice changes but overall great read/listen!

A long and boring listen

Unfortunately this book falls flat. It is much too long; it should be more like 7 hours, not the 15 hours. It is very slow paced and rather boring. Drake’s approach to D/S is explained in his mind over and over in slow boring detail. Very little actually happens.

Kate was very wimpy and unappealing. Kate was just insincere in her interest, and Drake did not push in a dominant manner. Drake prefers to introduce newbies to the lifestyle, but should he have to beg them to be interested?

The narration is good.

Drake Restrained

I found this book long and drawn out. At times I found Drake and Kate both whinny. Enjoyed listening to the narrator just could not get into the book.
