Summary

From the creator of the award-winning ITV series Prime Suspect, starring Helen Mirren, comes the fascinating back story of the iconic DCI Jane Tennison.

In 1973 Jane Tennison, aged 22, leaves the Metropolitan Police Training Academy to be placed on probationary exercise in Hackney, where criminality thrives. We witness her struggle to cope in a male-dominated, chauvinistic environment, learning fast to deal with shocking situations with no help or sympathy from her superiors. Then comes her involvement in her first murder case. No one witnessed the savage beating of a tragic young girl who, the postmortem reveals, was pregnant when she died. The murder enquiry is soon running cold....

Before Prime Suspect

I really enjoyed listening to the story of Jane Tennison's life as a young WPC. The story had lots of strands with some twists and turns. There were times I found the style of writing a bit 'naive', though. I mostly enjoyed listening to the narrator, though her Jamaican, Scottish and Greek accents were shockingly poor and made me cringe.

Good book

I enjoyed it very much. I like la Plante books a lot, but this one is something special. Because it s not only about investigation, mystery, police etc, but also about chauvinism, bullying , learning on mistakes, getting your power.
And that makes the book more than just a mystery crime story.

Great book

I love Lynda La Plante books and this is a great one but not to keen on the person reading it .To many accents that sounded strange and a bit odd

Simply Amazing

I can honestly say this is one of the best new crime fiction audiobooks of recent months.

Aside from some minor issues surrounding accents it was well narrated.

I've never watched Prime Suspect but intend to do so now I've been introduced to Jane Tennison.

Loved this - it just worked.

Could see Helen Mirren playing Jane Tennison as a young copper. A very clever book bringing her early days alive.

Initially off-putting but became utterly compellin

I’ve listened to or read several of the books involving the later career of detective Jane Tennyson. So was interested in this recent addition to the series about her early time as a trainee WPC. I was tempted to give up early on as I found the descriptions of the crude behaviour and excessive misogyny of her male colleagues so obnoxious as to be unbelievable. But on reflection realised that maybe that is what women in some male-dominated jobs had to put up with in the 1960s. I'm glad I persevered for, although the gibes persist, Jane’s indomitable spirit and obvious abilities eventually win praise and acceptance. Moreover her early life in the force is woven into two compelling crime stories full of all the triumphs and setbacks of detective work, the twists and turns of which kept me glued to the recording.

The narrator is excellent with a wide range of accents and voices that really dramatize the book.

Tennison Returns

I was sceptical when buyong this... How wrong can you be? It filled in all the gaps where Jane is concerned.. Good naration but could have been better with a male narrator as well ....

Good detective story

An enjoyable detective story which kept an element of intrigue of the various characters. Very well read with good character accents.

Brilliant story

I loved the progress of this story as the characters were developed and the crimes committed. It managed to be gentle and hard hitting at the same time and I’d thoroughly recommend it.

Disappointed

I haven’t watched the television series and thought this would be a good introduction to Tennison.
I disliked the character and didn’t find her credible.
On top of that the narrator (who was fine generally) put on embarrassingly ridiculous accents. I was tempted to give up on the book as I squirmed listening to her.
