Editor reviews

Allison Kerby can communicate with ghosts, but her uncanny gift has its price: Allison frequently finds herself in the reluctant role of private investigator for specters seeking supernatural justice. When Allison’s late father - himself among her ghostly guests - suddenly disappears, Allison seeks clues to his whereabouts from her new client, a vindictive and vengeful visitor, his death shrouded in mystery. The ensuing intrigue threatens to make a ghost of Allison herself. Portraying the haunted heroine, actress Amanda Ronconi is animated and amiable, emphasizing Allison’s role as a caring, compassionate mother. Indeed, Allison is very much a family woman, even if her family is full of phantoms. Nevertheless, as Allison plunges into a plight of peril, Ronconi strikes an increasingly tremulous tone, rife with raw urgency.

Summary

Alison Kerby’s guesthouse is haunted all year round. Surviving the dead of winter, though? That’s a spooky proposition. Even with a blizzard bearing down on New Jersey, Alison can count on at least two guests—Paul and Maxie, the stubborn ghosts who share her shore town inn. Then there’s her widowed mother, who hasn’t just been seeing ghosts, she’s been secretly dating one: Alison’s father. But when he stands her up three times in a row, something’s wrong. Is he a lost soul…or a missing apparition? Their only lead is an overdramatic spirit—stage name Lawrence Laurentz—who doesn’t take direction well and won’t talk until they find his killer. Alison will reluctantly play the part of PI, but when the clues take a sinister turn, the writing is on the wall: If Alison can’t keep a level head, this will be her father’s final act—and maybe her own.

The perfect pick-me-up listen after a long day

I simply love this series, hasn't been anything but entertaining and witty so far. Lovable characters, hilarious adventures and a bit of family love to top it all.

Surprisingly fascinating story after slow start

It took me a while to be absorbed by the narrative and characters in this book bought on special offer. In the end I found it enjoyable though it's not the type of story I would normally pick.

Uninspired whodunit saved by great narration.

Pros:
Amanda Ronconi. Enjoyable narration as usual. She saves this from being returned.
Funny at times.

Cons:
The story. Uninspired whodunit plot that goes nowhere and everywhere at the same time.
The snow plow guy...

The least enjoyable book in the series so far.

Part IV

You need nice, wee, comedies at this time of year and this did the job!

The ghosts are bothering the granny now, implying that the dead grandpa may have died under mysterious circumstances and is in some kind of ethereal trouble.

OK ish

This is the second in the series that I have read, I was quite amused and enchanted by the first, but I found this one a little tedious and much less fun.

I do think that this is possibly because the first one I read held a certain amount of novelty for me, whereas this didn't have the same element of surprise.

The story was OK, but I found the reading a bit tiresome this time. As I said, I think this is maybe down to my preference rather than the story being less entertaining than the first one I read. (Old Haunts)

Good but not the best in the series

Another fun cozy mystery set at the guesthouse. A few new characters join the existing cast for another case. Similar to past cases Alison reluctantly joins the case and brings along her group with some funny consequences. Well written and plotted out, the only thing I think this missed (other than the summer beach theme) is it was a bit lacking in some of the witty banter what was present in the first couple books. Otherwise it was a lot of fun.

Ms. Ronconi does a great job with the book and really brings the characters to life!

Love books.

This one is a little slower then the others and could have been shorten a bit. But over all I like it and the evolving story lines.

They just get better!

I love this series. Great story and characters. They get better with each story. Alison and the rest are a hoot. I read the first 4 books several years ago and decided to try them in Audible. I am so glad I did! Amanda Ronconi did an awesome job. I listen every where including work and have to catch myself from laughing out loud.
Thank you both!

Snowed in With the Ghosts

Would you listen to Chance of a Ghost again? Why?

Excellent book for relistening too.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked that it took place in the winter and a big storm hits Jersey.

Which character – as performed by Amanda Ronconi – was your favorite?

I think Maxie would be my choice as Ronconi really captures the salty ill tempered resentful Maxie.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

No but I did not care much for Maxie being able to fly with Alison so far in a storm. Just seemed to not be something a ghost can do. That is the reason for 4 stars instead of 5.

Any additional comments?

As always a fast and fun book to listen to or read.

This is Book #4, listen to Old Haunts before this

Have you listened to any of Amanda Ronconi’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, great as usual. She always has a way to bring out the humor of any storyline.

Loved it!

I love the subtle humor of this author. The narrator is fabulous. When I listened to the sample, I didn't like her at first, now I don't know why, because she is really very good. I love the relationship between mother and daughter, and their ghostly friends.
