A buried skeleton. A dark conspiracy. A ruthless killer.

When flash floods unearth a human skeleton at a local beauty spot, DCI Tom Raven is called to investigate. Who is the dead man, and how did he end up there?

Help is on hand from forensic anthropologist Dr Chandice Jones who enjoys the challenge of working with old bones. But is Raven one challenge too many for her?

Meanwhile, Detective Sergeant Becca Shawcross is called to a local nursing home where an elderly resident has taken his own life. The death appears to be a routine case of suicide, but Becca has her suspicions. Could foul play be involved?

As the two investigations widen, Raven and Becca begin to find common threads. And when things take a sinister turn, they must work together to untangle the connections between the two deaths.

Because some secrets are best left buried.

Set on the North Yorkshire coast, the Tom Raven series is perfect for fans of LJ Ross, JD Kirk, Simon McCleave, and British crime fiction.

I needed a new detective series to follow and I’m so glad I gave this one a go because it’s great. The characters are interesting and have their own backstories however they don’t overtake the main storyline. Easy to follow and kept my attention right until the end. My only slight gripe is the narrator. While his different voices are good, his tone is quite monotonous and one toned. He also speaks quite quickly, I had to slow the speed down.

Loving this series

Atmospheric and with a solid narrative arc. But the narrator uses an inflection in every single sentence, and his depiction of the voices of women make them all sound foolish. Fine books, annoying narration.

Great book, the narration: less so

How many more words can this narrator mangle? A rattling yarn for Tom Raven fans and old and new crimes woven well together. But the mispronounced words rather lets the story down.

Good story totally spoiled by narration
