Elvis Cole is just a detective who can't say no, especially to a girl in a terrible fix. And Jennifer Sheridan qualifies. Her fiancé, Mark Thurman, is a decorated LA cop with an elite plainclothes unit, but Jennifer is sure he's in trouble - the kind of serious trouble that only Cole can get him out of.

Five minutes after his new client leaves the office, Cole and his partner, the enigmatic Joe Pike, are hip-deep in a deadly situation as they plummet into a world of South Central gangs, corrupt cops and conspiracies of silence. And before long, every cop in the LAPD is gunning for a pair of armed and dangerous killers - Cole and Pike.

I love the Elvis Cole series and, for me, Mel Foster has the perfect voice for Elvis snd Joe.

Great author, great narrator

I like Robert Crais' detective, Elvis Cole and also Joe Pike they don't take themselves too seriously yet get the job done. I like the subtle humour in his writing.
My only complaint is that Mel Foster wasn't the 'voice' of Elvis Cole, he speaks slowly and ponderously, and his voice is too gruff. A personal preference,of course!
The story was good and logical. Overall well worth a read.

well written

My wife and I listened to this story on a few recent journeys and quite enjoyed it. The characters were credible, the narrative engaging and the plot was sufficient to maintain interest. However, we did find the blasphemy and swearing a little challenging.
The narrative was rather deadpan and we wonder if something a little more varied might have allowed us to score it more highly.

Not quite Michael Connelly

I’ve been thinking about these Elvis Cole books narrated by Mel Foster. I have nearly all of the series and hoped that I could get used to his voice. I ordered more credits and ordered Free Fall. It was a mistake. His voice is dreadful. I couldn’t listen to it and had to return the book. I hope that somebody better tells the next Joe Pike story which is due out in June next year..
