I love Lights Out by Navessa Allen. Aly is a trauma nurse. Josh is her ex's roommate and son of a serial killer. It's a dark comedy and I love dark comedies. It explores taboos but, ultimately, it's just a good old-fashioned love story. I heard Netflix is adapting it now, which I'm really excited about. Maybe instead of Knives Out, this one could be called Knives In. If you know, you know.
I also really love Shield of Sparrows by Devney Perry. Devney is one of my favorite authors and humans. I love her. She's created this world of magic and creatures that you just want to be a part of. Her worlds have vibes for days. It's about Odessa, who's an overlooked daughter who doesn't just find her love, but total agency. And I've got the feeling that in book 3, which is called Seven and the Swift, she's gonna get to the crux of the crux.
The Simple Wild by K.A. Tucker is one of my favorites. It's based on a Toronto girl named Calla Fletcher, and she travels to the remote Alaskan wilderness, which just the setting itself is so great, and to hear it described was so much fun. But she connects with her estranged, terminally ill father, and her dad owns an airline. It's a really small airline, and Jonah is his top pilot, and he's not happy about it because he has to kind of take care of Calla. He's a grumpy—it's a sunshine, enemies-to-lovers story, and I am here for those. I love them.
I really love all of Catherine Cowles' books, but if I had to choose, it's the Tattered & Torn series. All of Catherine Cowles' books are so great. I love her. She is so great at small-town romance and serious suspense. It’s a lesser-known series, but just really grounded, and I get completely sucked in by her stories. I love them.
Last but not least, I am currently listening to Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman, which is not something I would usually listen to, but I've seen this book everywhere, even in stores that don't sell books, which is just insane. This one's a surprise coming from me, but I'm always asked what I wouldn't write, and science fiction is always my answer. But listening to this one has made me kind of change my mind and want to play around. I don't know if you'd really call it science fiction, but it's definitely not a romance, and it kind of follows a video game in the book. It's about Carl and his ex-girlfriend's cat, Princess Donut, and it's been so much fun listening to so far.
Colleen Hoover is a bestselling writer of many books. It Ends with Us had a successful theatrical release, and more recently, Verity was adapted into a film starring Anne Hathaway.
