With his superstitious Irish nature, British Detective Joe Rafferty shouldn't be surprised that his first murder case as a newly-promoted Essex detective is a tough one. But the murder victim, whom the media has dubbed "The Faceless Lady", has no ID and has been bludgeoned beyond recognition. She also supposedly had no access to the secure psychiatric facility where her dead body is found. The news media has seized on the case, placing Rafferty in an unwelcome spotlight.

Not a tale to get your teeth into.

For the first in the series, this is pretty bad. I'm hoping that the others pick up a little and get more interesting. I don't mind police procedure a..Show More »

Lapsed Catholic DI Joe Rafferty isn't best pleased when he learns his latest case is at the local Roman Catholic convent, where a body was discovered in a shallow grave in the grounds. The nuns' order is an enclosed, contemplative one, and access to their house and grounds is far from easy. Rafferty is inclined to think that was an inside job. He doesn't find it as hard as his DS, Dafyd Llewellyn, to believe that nuns are capable of murder.

    Enjoyed it but

This was a murder mystery but not very gripping hence only 4 stars. More development of some of the lead characters would have been good.

Keen to confront the bully who made his youth a misery, Mickey had gone to the reception, but then found his tormentor's body
