  • Summary

  • For nearly two decades a mysterious serial bomber terrorized America, building and delivering increasingly deadly bombs disguised as packages to scientists, professors and seemingly random people across the country. His bombs killed three and injured and disfigured 23 others. The Unabomber taunted law enforcement and evaded capture by meticulously hand-crafting each device without leaving any forensic evidence behind, making it impossible for the FBI to identify the evil genius through traditional investigative avenues.

To track down the terrorist bomber the FBI’s UNABOM Task Force knew it would have to innovate. When the Unabomber mailed a 35,000-word, single-spaced, typewritten “manifesto” to the New York Times and Washington Post, demanding that it be published, the Task Force realized it had just received the evidence it needed. The manifesto was a turning point in the investigation. While the Unabomber’s carefully crafted critique of modern society revealed his hubris and hatred for what he termed the “evils of technology,” it also unwittingly handed FBI investigators the keys to his identity.

The Audible Original Series Where the Devil Belongs is the first complete, behind-the-scenes story of the Unabomber's unfathomable crime spree and the groundbreaking forensic methods used to finally catch him. It brings together the survivors and victims’ family members with the FBI Agents who worked the case to tell this incredible story in their own words, many of them for the very first time.

This is how it all began. In 1978, two relatively small bombs explode in the same building on Northwestern University’s campus. But local authorities don’t make much of it, until a third and similar device detonates aboard an American Airlines passenger jet. The FBI determines that the same person made all of the devices. They initiate Major Case #75 entitled: UNABOM, which will become one of the longest and most expensive investigations in U.S. history

He was most definitely disaffecTED

A most remarkable story of how the mind of a disgruntled genius frustrated the minds and guile of the FBI's best for nearly 20 years.
It's a marvellous insight into the workings of both the mind of a bomber and a proper peak behind the scenes of the sometimes flawed, but limitless machine, known as the FBI.
It was well read and the change of the various character voices, gave it that edge and the desired documentary feel. Hi fives all round🖐️

Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction! Very sad for the victims but a fascinating story.

Brilliant

Maybe the best podcast - esp true crime one - I've listened to. Fascinating from start to finish.

exceptional

Jim Clemente knows how to put a podcast and story together and I've never been disappointed. This in-depth look at the hunt for and subsequent capture of the Unabomber shows the FBI at its best and worst. There isn't a moment that will bore you rigid; you may swear in disbelief at some of the attitudes of the time but you won't regret listening.

Lots of interviews with the FBI and victims

Lots of interview audio with key FBI agents and victims brings this to life. Not just dry facts gleamed from reports or newspapers. Very thorough and interesting, though does slow down in pace in some of the middle episodes.

A superb Listen

This is, quite simply, brilliant. It’s a real art to keep the listener fully engaged for the entirety of an audiobook, and this one does from start to finish. It is history, told by those who were involved, with so much more detail and intimacy than can be conveyed through a documentary. It is a superb piece of writing, with excellent editing that allows seamless transition from the narration to those voicing their individual experiences. Outstanding. I highly recommend After The Fall, from the same team, which is equally brilliant.

Jim Clemente!

Anything presented by Jim Clemente is bound to be good (Call Me God, Evil Has a Name) - he’s my favourite non-fictional FBI agent ;)
This story of the search for the Unabomber is an essential for any true crime listener. It’s well researched and presented, plenty of input from the people involved, and keeps you gripped right to the end. Brilliant.
